Back in the day, I was actually hoping for Panasonic’s HDDVD format to win over Sony’s BRD. The compression was arguably better, less lossy, etc., etc. IIRC, BluRay became the standard due to the greater flexibility with interface design features and other interactive capabilities it had that HD apparently didn’t. Personally, I’d take better video quality over fancy main menus any day, but they didn’t ask my opinion when the standards decision was made. Then again, I’m biased, as I’m very much an anti-Sony bigot, so they probably wouldn’t have listened to me anyway.
