News The Return of 90s Television: Murphy Brown is coming back, too. What show will return next?

Nope. I'd say there was a chance until Tim Allen had a hissy fit over Last Man Standing being canceled. Unless the show isn't owned by ABC then there is a chance on another network but I think he would want to much money.
I like Tim Allen and I think Home Improvement could accommodate the characters actually ageing without it being seen as a negative. Like they wouldn't have to be locked in the past as parents of a young family. Wilson could look over the fence with older eyes - all would be good.

Where did Tim Allen have a hissy fit? I heard one interview and read another where he talked about and was asked about LMS, and none of them came remotely close to a hissy fit.

I do know they CGI'd Jack Lord into a modern episode. Not sure what that actually meant re: reboot vs continuation.

Hawaii 5-0 is a reboot. I just wish it was a continuation and have it be the new cops and 1-2 old characters/actors are around.

Right after it was canceled he went around bitching how it was because of Trump and how ABC is anti Trump, and how it was all because of his conservative views. It went on for months and months. Most people think it was because they would been new contracts and his salary was too high.

So obviously ABC brings Roseanne back, who is a Trumpster, and the first episode deals with her being a Trump supporter because they only want neo-liberal viewpoints on TV. *sarcasm*

Eye-rolling whenever I hear a complaint about “nothing original on TV/from Hollywood.” But then rip apart original content, or they tank anyway.

Anyways, don’t know the Murphy Brown series. Home Improvement was great but Clarissa may not have aged well, though I loved it as little kid.

The 90s were the feel-good era where world problems seemed to be starting to get solved, and the society/technology/economy triumvirate of civilization peaked. That bubble burst. Bringing those thirty year old shows back but adding the layer of modern harsh-reality could be an excellent source of entertainment.

I'm holding out for a Haggis/King Due South reboot.

Funny thing is, Paul Gross is old enough now to be the father figure to the original character. He's currently playing another RCMP officer in a new series, but looking very different and I almost didn't recognize him. Anyway, if a reboot ever materializes, I'd like to see Paul Gross involved at least as an EP, as I think he also had a lot of input into his character.

I'm expecting a Buffy revival any time now. Whedon isn't doing anything, girl power is dominating at the box office and on TV, and Buffy is a beloved franchise. Have it follow a new slayer (or maybe a group of slayers a la Sailor Moon) in high school while the original cast can serve as mentors or special guest stars. Now that Disney owns the rights to the Buffyverse they could make a new show to kickstart their streaming service.
Article came up about that in my Facebook feed only last week - it was clickbait of course, with a title implying a reboot was already green lit, but it did include some quotes from the studio saying essentially 'yes we want to do it, but won't do it without Joss. When he's ready, we're ready'

I have some strongly mixed feelings about the idea myself, but I'm almost sure it will go ahead at some point.

^ I’d love a Buffy revival! The characters were friendly, fun people and idiosyncratic in an endearing way. Despite dealing with a horrific subject matter, it was entertaining and not frightening, at least for me when I watched it as kiddo.

I'll pass on a BtVS revival. Whendon's revealed what he wanted to do with the characters by way of the continuing seasons in comic form. It's not good.

Every BtVS fan I've seen, so far, agrees. Of course there are always people who disagree.

Whedon's lack of budgetary retrains, feelings and communications with real actors, and so forth have shown Whedon needs limitations of he does what he's done.

Weren't the Kuzuis trying to weasel something along a while back?

I think he'd be a good fit to be the clueless chief consul.

Hell Nickelodeon is bringing back Clarissa Explains It All.

So am I to assume that the original series lied and she DIDN'T explain it all the first time? Or is it just that there's a bunch of new stuff that's come up in the intervening decades that she has to explain now? :D

Last summer I briefly tried to rewatch the classic Murphy Brown series from the start but it didn't hold - it just didn't stick for me and perhaps I bailed too early (episode 7 or 8) but the ridiculously long, numerous and pointless impromptu Motown dance-out sessions were irritating me to the point that I couldn't enjoy the rest of the show. It is said that those same musical interludes (and their licensing costs) are the reason the show was never officially released on physical media of any kind beyond season 1.

That's backed up by this article: http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/articles/holdup.cfm#MurphyBrown . I seem to recall similar issues preventing further DVD releases of The Drew Carey Show & Malcolm in the Middle as well.

Shows with no good ending or no ending period, should be likely candidates. Take "Newsradio" -- no ending, just a cliffhanger of sorts. Take "Firefly" -- no ending at all.

Firefly got a movie.

NewsRadio
's finale works about as well as anything in Season 5 did. (Mr. James "retired" and moved to New Hampshire, where he bought a small-town newspaper and decided to bring the rest of the staff with him, leaving WNYX in the care of Dave & Matthew.) And, really, does anyone want to see them revive that corpse after the depressing, jumbled mess that the show became post-Phil Hartman?

If they were going to bring back any of the Must-See-TV sitcoms of the 1990s, I'd like 3rd Rock from the Sun. Granted, Jan Hooks is no longer with us and Joseph Gordon Levitt would be too busy for more than a cameo but I think it could work.

Weren't the Kuzuis trying to weasel something along a while back?

IIRC, they own the rights to the movie and were trying to do a remake of that.

Both. :p

The continuation will be called Clarissa Jr. Explains It All Again. (No idea if that will be the name, but I like it.)

Music issues only are an issue with DVD sales which have been dead for a decade. Malcolm in the Middle was on Netflix for awhile. Murphy Brown and Drew Carey should have been streaming for ages now too. However Will and Grace was all on DVD and still wasn't on streaming until this fall.

Fox is looking to bring back Last Man Standing because of Roseanne ratings. They should have picked it up last year when it was canceled.

Fox also wants to bring back Malcolm in the Middle, Married with Children and That 70s Show.

You know a show I would like to see brought back is "Oz." You can have some of the old prsioners be part of the show along with new ones. This was the show I think made "The Sopranos" possible and that was what ended up creating the Golden Age of Tv. I

Also a show I would like to see rebooted but no t connected to the old canon is "Herman's Head." To me it is a great concept but it wasn't always as good as it should be. I could say the same for "Sliders" which I also want to come back. Just skip all the character deaths and say that season 3 was another group of Sliders much like the ones we saw in Season 1 and 2. You could even go with the same actors playing those characters from yet another Earth only have Quinn in this new world/show invent Sliding in 2018 or post 2018 when the show is set. Maybe they meet the group we use to follow because they are still sliding having never made it back to their earth or maybe they settled down on a world.

My idea about how they could bring back Sliders (storywise): SyFy does a short wrap-up miniseries (ala Farscape The Peacekeeper Wars) that brings the original to a satisfying conclusion for fans of the original (and bringing the full original cast back) - including the fall of the Kromaggs and undoing some of the damage from the latter seasons. TAnd then they can start up the show again with a new group of characters from yet another "similar to Earth Prime" Earth.

Of course, I wish the Robert K. Weiss long-in-development-hell Sliders motion picture could get made.

That would be in a perfect world. I have no idea if there is any desire from anyone (studio, writers, cast or fans) to bring Sliders back. Is it even in the public consciousness now?
