The new captain.

HIjol

sorry, quote function screwed up here....

I think what you suggest as change has potential for some higher level writing and performing, Dennis, but what of the (first time I am going to use this word) "trope" of what Harvey Keitel (Chief Klough) said to Matthew McConaughey (Lt. Andrew Tyler) in U-571:

"You're the skipper now. And the skipper always knows what to do - whether he does or not!"

Tom Hanks?

Finally saw "Captain Phillips" this past weekend.
I could see Hanks as a Captain.
"Captain...Unknown vessel approaching from astern."
"On screen."
"It's a small scout ship...Minimally armed. It looks like they're going to attack us!"
"Pirates...Not again.
Arm quantum torpedoes. Maximum yield."
"Captain! Lifesigns indicate only less than a dozen on board."
"I don't care. They only learn one way. Fire!"
"I am the Captain now my ass."

I just hope they don't stop at the captain when picking the talent. With Enterprise, it was like, "Here's Scott Bakula, and a bunch of people you don't know!" Some shows get lucky with having nobodies cast, but I hope they don't take such a risk.

When Bakula was announced as the Captain I was pretty jazzed, but I must say I found his acting on Enterprise horrible.

Not necessarily as captain, and I've said it elsewhere, but I want Tom Mison on the show.

He's my current tv actor man-crush.

Man-crushable, but I really don't want an American or Brit in the lead. I'd love for them to find a really great foreign actor and bring them to the States - like Tarantino did with Waltz. Their foreign flavor alone would be something new and interesting to experience, unlike when they cast an American/Brit of ethnic ancestry that really is just an American/Brit.
:techman:

I forget the actor's name.
But I really like the guy that plays Captain Chandler on "The Last Ship".
And let's bring along Adam Baldwin and Rhona Mitra for good measure.

That would be pretty redundant. The Last Ship is the best Star Trek show in production right now.

Yeah, he was definitely not the best on the show, but he was at least a recognizable name within the sci-fi community.

I don't want them to just pick from there though, or somehow we'll get Kevin Sorbo as the captain. We need good actors regardless of if they're well known for sci-fi. And not just the captain. So many of the underlings have been just mediocre actors.

Wasn't he on a show with Scott Bakula and Ray Romano? That's it, Ray Romano for captain.

For real though, it wouldn't be a bad idea to have some of the cast have comedic experience. It seemed to work pretty well for Breaking Bad.

Alicia Coppola. She got screwed, but necessarily, on Voyager. Lots of subsequent work, including Jericho.

Tim Russ, but obviously not as Tuvok. I guess it's not likely to happen as he is otherwise engaged.

Regarding TOS, I remember a story....about the Powers That Be prohibiting a Chinese character.

So, are there any promising Chinese actresses out there?

I remember being impressed with Zhang Ziyi, Gong Li and Michelle Yeoh from "Memoires of a Geisha", but I also remember reading that some of the performers had to speak in phonetic English, so that would maybe be an issue...or maybe not! :)

Consider one actor with something of an ethnic background.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Nykl

I understand that the Atlantis scientist Zelenka was originally supposed to be Russian, but was changed into a Czech character. Because Nykl can speak Czech, and play someone from his ethnic background.

I like David Nykl, but I can't really picture him as a captain. Maybe that's because I still associate him with Dr. Zelenka, but there we are.

This is a looooong thread so I haven't read every reply but has anyone mentioned John Carroll Lynch or Casey Biggs?
