The new captain.

Re: uniforms

I'd love to see a uniform inspired by the DS9/Voyager coveralls ...
Personally would like to see an end to the jumpsuit/coveralls as the standard daily wear. For someone engaged in maintenance duty perhaps, but have the usually seen uniform be a shirt and trousers, with the option of a skirt (doesn't have to be a mini).

I'd like to see a Latino captain. I'd like to see a decent female ship captain.
Given world events, maybe a Arab Muslim woman as Captain, the character and the actress. It would be a statement, Muslim women aren't typically depicted as high ranking authority figures.

Star Trek has a (usually undeserved) reputation for being socially advanced. Let's find a line, and deliberately push it.

I wouldn't mind a captain something like "O'Neill" as played by Richard Dean Anderson on the Stargate shows - kind of pragmatic and a little overrun by the eccentric specialists he has to manage. Sort of a blue-collar guy. Make the back-and-forth with the scientists funny.
The funniest example was in The Other Guys, the back and forth between O'Neill and Felger.

Yeah, I think a similar dynamic could work in Trek. Think of the captain of a small scout ship, who interacts with guest stars aboard his vessel. These guest stars could be "Mission Specialists", to borrow NASA lingo for shuttle missions.

I can't say I'd be too excited about the new captain being anything like Jack O'Neill. Does that guy ever take anything seriously?

Re: uniforms

How about a captain who is part artificial, from some old war wound or disaster?

I'd love to see a uniform inspired by the DS9/Voyager coveralls, but with its own unique flavor relating to the rest of the show.
I happened to love the ENT uniforms the best after the TNG design, but thats probably nostalgia talking.

DS9 plus pockets and utility belts. Maybe some tech built into the clothes?

Jack O'Neill of the first three or four seasons was actually a very serious character that just tended to joke around a lot and always had a sarcastic one-liner. As the show went on and RDA gradually lost interest, the joking sarcastic O'Neill became more prominent until eventually the jokes and one-liners became what he was known for.

Not that I ever had a problem with that, RDA is a funny guy and Jack O'Neill was a breath of fresh air compared to other sci-fi leads.

Fun fact: former USAF Chief of Staff Michael Ryan claims he's dealt with many colonels who act just like O'Neill, and a few who are worse.

You mean like that bridge officer in STID?

Why not an Israeli captain? or Japanese?

Why not Dr Bashir's grown up daughter? And she inherits all of his genetic modifications.
And her Mother turns out to be Ezri Dax.

How about a Captain who looks and is believed to be human but revealed to be a human-looking alien whose past has come back to haunt them.

Below deck characters would be interesting, would get an idea as to the numbers of individual crew members who operate a star ship.

Ming-Na Wen, Michelle Yeoh or Ziyi Zhang in the Captain's chair perhaps, a strong female lead of Asian origin with a great presence on screen (I always find myself focusing on them whenever watching anything they're on, I am torn whenever I watch Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) whilst also displaying great grace whilst whooping ass.

The show I remember her for is Stargate Universe

Yes, and also for a lengthy run on ER. I think she could be a very interesting choice as I think she can readily play a very forceful character.

That's where I always think of her from as well, more so than Agents, she was one of the highlights of SGU for me (which is my favourite SG series).

There's also her voice work in The Spirits Within, her voice alone just has such an warm gentleness and great strength to it that she would be great for Picard-esque pontificating.

... whose past has come back to haunt them.
Or the new captain could be a ghost.

The captain is a holographic projection of the ship's computer. Or a nano-bot ghost, made up of nano-vapor. Or some other bit of TNG-ENT technobabble.

Oh gawd ... did my mind just come up with that!

Hmmm...Ghost in the Machine. I like it a lot. Room for exotic problem solving, outside-the-box writing, and the Captain manifesting her/him/itself in many different guises, depending on the plot needs! We could all conceivably get our wish for different forms, nationalities and cultures of "Captain"!

Wikipedia indicated that Ming-Na Wen is age 52, and Sofia Helin is age 43. In terms of age, I can imagine Ming-Na Wen being cast as the captain of a ship, and Sofia Helin as a first officer.

Of course, it is easy to imagine Ming-Na Wen cast as a character aboard a starship, because she has already played one.

BTW, if you check out the mauve shirt link for Sgt. Riley, you will see mention of the first mauve shirt, Transporter Chief Kyle (TOS).

I don't believe that I have seen Helin's acting yet.

What about Yvonne Strahovski? She's a bit young compared to the other candidates posted here, at the age of 33, but she's a great actress, with charisma, screen presence and action gravitas if need be. She'd be nearly the same age as Bill Shatner in 1966 by the time this show premieres, so she's not too young. Also has some sci-fi experience as the voice actor of Miranda Lawson in the Mass Effect games.

I just think that CBS would rather have someone in their 30s or 40s than 50s or 60s as the lead of a new Trek show. They need as much viewership as possible, and a kickass young female lead will help that I think.
