The movie franchise after Bad Robot/Pine

There's no real telling with Hollywood but where do you think Paramount will want to take the Star Trek movie franchise after Bad Robot is done and Zachary Quinto, Chris Pine and company have decided to move on?

A return to the Prime Timeline? A post-TNG flick/final reunion? Another reboot? A TNG reboot?

After Bad Robot is done and Zachary Quinto, Chris Pine and company too? Hopefully, that will be after more films with them all or at least ST4.
Paramount might keep it in the Kelvin timeline, but move it forward to the NG/DS9/VOY era.

Hollywood LOVES to recycle old unused ideas. I'll bet they'll either do the Romulan War (Star Trek: The Beginning, starring Kirk and Spock's grandparents) or the "SEAL Team Six of the Star Trek Universe" idea the former Paramount president was talking about.

Or maybe they'll go further back and redo the 1990's Star Trek: The Early Years reboot idea, with another new Kirk and company uniting as cadets to save the day at Starfleet Academy.

I doubt that Paramount will revisit the Prime timeline or I should say the Prime timeline will not look like TMP/WOK/SFS/TVH/TFF/TUC production design. Instead, Prime or Kelvin will always look like the J.J. films or STDiscovery production designs.

In time the aesthetic will change somehow - the Beyond uniforms were reminiscent of the TNG ones

I hope that will be it for the Kelvin continuity - no more. I certainly don't want to see a TNG or DS9 reboot.

I'm more than happy for Trek to continue on TV if Paramount decides film Trek hasn't got enough of an audience.

Due to the licensing terms, they would keep it in the Kelvin timeline. They almost have to. However they could go almost anywhere with it.

I think in the end it would depend on which actors wants to do more Trek and which didn't. They certainly would have an option to do what ST has almost never done and promote some people and maybe move them around to a different ship or station and tell new stories with some old cast and some new cast.

The second option is you just go to a totally new crew but set in the same kelvin timeline so you could have cameros if they wanted to but that would be a tougher sell then Captain Spock or Captain Sulu movie.

There's really nothing stopping Paramount from going back to the Prime Timeline--if a new group of producers want to go back there. Paramount just has a license to do Trek movies, but I don't think there's any stipulation regarding continuity. It probably comes down to the creative decisions of the producers. IIRC, Bad Robot created the Kelvin Timeline to create a new TOS continuity for them play in, but a post-Bad Robot group not want to continue that. In such a scenario that they don't, they could go back to any point in the original timeline or create yet another new timeline for themselves.

Whatever direction they go in, CBS will still get paid and add the movie to their list of licensed properties like they've done since 2009.

That was a rumor fans started, but a license for any or all of the TV shows can be obtained. They can agree not to overlap them as far as when they are released, though.

No recast TNG, etc. No TOS reboots. New crew set in either universe during an unexplored time period, preferably in the future after the last events of whichever timeline.

That said, given the way the interest in the Kelvin stuff has dropped off, I think it should be rested for a while. I think that the studio really needs to find someone who is capable of magic by making a movie that appeals to the blockbuster crowd but also feels more like Trek than the first two J.J. films did (well, certainly Into Darkness anyhow). That gets to the heart of what Trek is at its best. Sadly I don’t think they will ever hire such talent as I think their vision of what Trek is doesn’t necessarily accord with what I am saying.

I recall Bryan Fuller saying ages ago that they were considering setting DSC in the KT for a time. If they weren't allowed, it never would have been an option.

My fanboy hope would be for them to return to the Prime Timeline and explore the theoretical "2nd" 5-year mission. Fill in the gaps between TMP and TWOK - there's a whole decade worth of untold stories to tell. But I realize that a "new" timeline is more likely if they do make more films beyond Bad Robot.

Although TNG on TV may have been the height of Trek's popularity, I believe there is little argument that Kirk, Spock and McCoy remain the true cultural icons, even for those too young to have seen TOS. That being the case, in order to try to drum up as much general audience support as they can, whenever a new movie 'series' is launched, it will include Kirk, Spock and McCoy.

My preference would be to avoid another re-boot. Hit the ground running, just like they did with the first ever episode of TOS. There was no need to disclose the 'origin' or original gathering of the crew. Get some writers to come up with some terrific sci-fi ideas and just have them out there exploring.

Again, in keeping with general audience support, there will have to be enough sizzle and pop to address the miniscule attention span of modern audiences, but balance it off with big, thoughtful ideas and character moments.
