Game The Most Disliked Third Season Episode, 2025 Edition

It can be easily overlooked because of how "regular" it is, but I think "Displaced" is a super satisfying episode. It's a simple suspense story, but the execution is flawless. This is like the Star Trek version of a perfectly cooked roast chicken.

The Abandoned has the fascinating story with Odo trying to raise the young Jem'Hadar to avoid his gentic upbringing.

Someone earlier in the thread mentioned there was not enough love being shown for TOS. I will help with saving another TOS favorite of mine, "WHOM GODS DESTROY".

I really love this one, and I know I might be in the minority saying that. Steve Ihnat was fantastic as Garth. (Which is no surprise... every role I've seen him performing, he was really good.) I also like how it's one of the few times we get all 4 founding races of the Federation shown in the same episode... human, Vulcan, Andorian, and Tellarite. At least, not until much later in the franchise.

I also love "Whom Gods Destroy." Definitely a highlight of season 3 TOS for me.

"Rajiin" is good trashy fun. That was actually the first piece of the Xindi arc I enjoyed.

Jean Lisette Aroeste was a new writer breathing fresh air into TOS. Loved both her stories and I'm overdue for a rewatch.

Skillfully blending an unrequited love story, action and urgent need to get out of a tight situation, Leonard Nimoy getting to act like someone other than Spock, and an alien being so conceptually "ugly" that it would drive a person insane.

The direction in this is pretty great, right down to the use of the fisheye lens for surreality.

(A great scene in of itself, but an aside: The reason for Geordi was not to lampshade a lame joke about "the blind man driving the ship", it was to prove how technological advances finally allowed enough control for a blind person TO operate the ship, something that could not be done with the limitations of the 23rd century.)

Humans tend to forget. Many non-Vulcan species do. Put Medusan ambassador inside Spock's bod and the biggest whoopsie of all happens: The director got sacked for using the too-expensive fisheye lens again.

Since I couldn't find the scene showing Spock only just after making contact with the Medusan and initial reactions to being inside a body, this will have to do - but it's a good one. The story has many... A shame as the scene I was hoping to find was another great showcase for Nimoy, embracing a script that has a piquancy that's most underrated.

"Alter Ego" is a cool little episode. I like how it takes a hard turn midway through, it's a nice showcase for Tuvok, probably the best use of the tropical resort holoprogram, and it's a variation on that "lonely deep space outpost" trope I always love.

I'm not often a fan of Picard's approach to the Prime Directive, but I have to say he definitely "walked the walk" for it in "Who Watches the Watchers?" And as a young(er) atheist, I appreciated the general theme even though it was admittedly heavy-handed.

Meridian gets a pass for the B story, featuring a pervy Jeffrey Combs, a great threat by Kira, and a hilarious denoument. The A story gets panned, but I found it inoffensive.

A weighted balance, and from what I remember,

TOS: "Requiem For Methuselah"

is an interesting enough tale by Jerome Bixby, who'd written some of TOS's all-time greats. Somehow, this one isn't at the top of the all-time greats list, yet it has elements I'd place it above those all-time greats with because of the ingenuity therein, even if other elements seem gimmicky or weird-at-face-value, yet there is a depth, from what I can remember.

The literal building of a lover is another android crutch that TOS whipped out on occasion, but it's played seriously, and the robot (Rayna) isn't the real plot meat: It's the mystery of Flint, as well as Kirk believing he found a true love, but was betrayed by one little fact.

Somehow, the story overcomes what could easily have been fumbled and turned into a throwaway risible affair, no pun intended.

Another strong scene, for multifaceted reasons. The acting is universally great, but the actress playing Rayna really sets the tone to actually believe this episode in being more and beyond merely "dude builds a sex doll", which is a pitiful description as the story has a lot more going on under the hood and gets into some neat high-concept with an audacious claim as to who Flint is. It's brilliant.

A story I now want to rewatch sooner rather than later, and not because Spock blends in with the background a little too much, this scene is poignant is Flint just looks all smug as Kirk is being used by Flint, unwittingly teaching his creation about the human condition - something Flint could not do alone (for a multitude of multifaceted reasons). The aside that the melody was written by a master musician yet unpublished is fascinating for plenty of other reasons. Ditto for the ryetalyn conundrum that McCoy discusses. A poetic and definite gem, this story surprisingly is. Or I'm reading way too much into it.

A fun story, both of them. It also made Quark one of the only leads to not only have an Orb experience, but to actually visit the Prophets themselves. (I believe only Sisko and Dax did both, and Dax only because she landed in the wormhole with Sisko in the pilot.)

"Terra Firma, Part 1" is so fucking good. Disco had a great take on the MU. The stuff with Carl in the snow is stunning. It accomplished the impossible feat of actually making me excited for the Georgiou series we never got. Such a shame they couldn't figure that out as a series before they lost their window.

Though, I will say I am profoundly disgusted and revolted by the Modern Trek fashion of making it Part 1. Come on guys, this is fucking easy! The correct way to do that is Part I! Though love to Prodigy for finally figured it out and changing their numbering conventions between seasons :bolian::)
