The Least Disliked Episode 2023: VOY Final Rounds

"Equinox." Said it before, I'll say it again: Janeway was pretty damn self-righteous for someone who hadn't gone through nearly the ordeal Ransom and his crew had. And this episode reminded me of how comparatively little the Voyager crew's principles and morals had really been challenged.

I will again vote for "Equinox" and off it. I actually do think it's pretty bad, now that it's really coming back to me. How did it end up here again? :)

Next round I will start with... hmm... it's hard now. I guess "Worst Case Scenario", it does strain credibility in crucial ways.

My vote this round is "BEFORE AND AFTER". The same reasons as before.

And if necessary, after.

What a wonderful list! I got bizzy and couldn't do S3 through S7 this time around, and it's great to see some non-usual suspects on the list. However, Before I get too ahead of myself After that speech, one of these remaining shows is clearly inferior to the others.

If "Worst Case Scenario" had stuck with the holonovel plot instead of the well worn "people in danger for real" trope of its latter half, it might be nearly unbeatable. But because of its weaker back half... computer, end program and erase.

Something that always bugged me about "Worst Case Scenario" is that it never seemed to bother the Maquis crew, and especially Chakotay, that Tuvok had been working on a scenario which would have taught his security officers to think of them -- particularly Chakotay, who at the time the scenario was created was already the first officer -- as actual or potential traitors. I would have expected that to sting a lot more.

Firstly, it was believed to be a "holonovel" when it was discovered. And, when Tuvok admitted what it was, he also stated unequivocally that he had long since declared it irrelevant and erased it. Maybe if Chakotay had discovered it while Tuvok was still working on it, he would have been upset. But this was years after the fact, and Tuvok had not only erased the program, but was the main advocate for its permanent deletion. Whatever Tuvok's reasons for creating it, they clearly no longer existed.

Firstly, it was believed to be a "holonovel" when it was discovered.
But that's not actually an improvement. Someone writing a holonovel that presents a certain portion of the crew as mutineers is still pretty insulting, no matter what their intent was.
when Tuvok admitted what it was, he also stated unequivocally that he had long since declared it irrelevant and erased it.
By the time we got Tuvok's current take on the scenario, the crew had already been "playing" for quite a while. It didn't bother anybody before they got this explanation? It must not have; even Torres was okay with seeing her old pal presented as the lead mutineer.

Plus, many of the Maquis might just have a sense of humor about it and can just have fun with the idea.

Janeway was right in this case when she said, "Loosen up."

And Tuvok's initial reason WASa legitimate one. He was doing his job.

I actually don’t know if I agree that Tuvok was doing his job. His Captain made the decision to make Chakotay the first officer (which included being Tuvok’s commanding officer). Tuvok was going to train his security team to view their first officer as a potential threat even though he would also be their commanding officer? It seems pretty inappropriate chain of command wise and destructive. If he had made it more generic maybe like a training for a theoretical mutiny.

Also, why did he have such an unrealistic view of how Chakotay would behave after serving with him in the Marquis?

I’ll be the 4th vote to off it…

And for the next round vote for Year of Hell. I like Year of Hell but it’s almost too good in the sense of that because it ends up not happening it makes their real challenges/stakes over the show seem so minor.

Sorry to be a dissenter, but I just love Year if Hell too much, and B&A was the only time we got something resembling character development on Voyager. So I will say that "Lifesigns" is my next pick. It's a very strong episode, but others are stronger. And besides, it still doesn't make sense to me that the Doc didn't adopt the name Denara gave him.
