Curiously, I don't recall Picard ever acting as you describe, but I can recall Sisko doing that on several occasions. Maybe not the firing phasers part, but I think we saw Sisko working in Main Engneering on the Defiant more times than we saw Picard in the room on the Enterprise.

Which you'd expect as the Enterprise had a huge crew, and the Defiant would often be worked by a crew of 20 to 30.

The D was also destroyed in Time Squared, so it's actually the fifth.

That was the first time I'd ever seen the Enterprise destroyed. I remember being really unnerved by that distorted video and log entry.

Nowadays they go through Enterprises like Kirk went through uniform shirts.

Enterprise D gets destroyed in Time Squared, Yesterday's Enterprise, Cause and Effect (several times), Timescape, Parallels, All Good Things (three times) and Generations.
Voyager only gets destroyed in Deadlock, Future's End (referenced), Year of Hell, Timeless, and Relativity

Gulp..I think I meant to say in Deep Space 9 as I'd seen that TNG episode with the USS Yamato in Contagion and just forgot about it!
