The face of the franchise is whatever show is being promoted for the 10 or so weeks said show is being run, including the run-up to the start of that 10-week run.
The mass audience wants entertainment. Deliver that first.
If anything, with the wider audience knowledge of Jean-Luc Picard, that series had the best chance of appealing to a wider audience than one led by Pike, who had appeared only in an unaired pilot episode (for about 20 years anyway), a TOS two-parter, and two Kelvin movies.
IDIC.The idea that the Star Trek franchise can or must only have one "face" is pure nonsense that demonstrates nothing more than an obsession with pointless hierarchical thinking. Star Trek is a franchise that has many faces and encompasses many styles of storytelling.
I think I might argue the exact opposite. Next Generation went off the air nearly 30 years ago, bringing back a well established character played by the same actor makes people think they may need to watch seven seasons of an ancient show to know what’s happening. With Pike (or Kirk) folks know it is more likely to be something totally new and easier to jump into.
one of the reasons Short Treks remains one of my favorite "Shows". They really tried so many things. Two different animation styles, a comedy or two, a musical, a love story, psychological vignette, a cereal commercial. etc. I hope they revisit the idea some dayThe idea that the Star Trek franchise can or must only have one "face" is pure nonsense that demonstrates nothing more than an obsession with pointless hierarchical thinking. Sequel to Discovery, Prequel to TOS.Like every other Trek series since TOS, it's a sequel.
No. STD will fade away soon. STP season 3 has had the highest numbers of any streaming star trek series so right now its the face if the franchise. No one really cares about the USS Discovery. The Enterprise D is far prettier and better. STSNW is right after STP.
Come on. "No One" is you (and other "you's") Lots of people (like me) LOVED the ship Discovery. It was gorgeous. The spore drive was a fascinating concept and the special effects were so fun. Enterprise D was a cozy ship for families, and I loved that too. But then I appreciate and enjoy a variety of different toppings on my Star Trek.
It wasn't for TOS.That design was rejected before TOS was even filmed.
The McQuarrie design? I thought that was preTMP not TOS.The Discovery is fugly in my opinion. A triangle? Yuck. That design was rejected before TOS was even filmed. There is a reason it was rejected. It's odd looking. It's the Edsel of starship designs.
The McQuarrie design? I thought that was preTMP not TOS.
