The Enemy Within

Watched this one again yesterday and it reminded me why I love the earlier episodes so much. Sulu gets loads of great lines, such as, "A hotline straight to the Captain? Are we that far gone?" I think poor Sulu was quite diluted later on in the run. He certainly doesn't seem like a bit part in this one, or the Man Trap for sure.

Uhura only appears in an uncredited voice over though.

Rand was so obviously suspicious of smarmy Kirk that I think she should have been shown going to Sick Bay to find Kirk, to make her a bit more active as a heroine. Having now read some of Grace's book and the adaptation of Harlan Ellison's version of CotEoF, it makes me even sadder that Rand was shoved aside. If they'd let her carry off Rand as written in Ellison's original, she might have become the have-a-go heroine that TOS lacked. I can see that she would have had a part in Space Seed, the Galileo 7, CotEoF, possibly Shore Leave (hard to tell if Barrows primary purpose was to be eye candy for McCoy or not), a Taste of Armageddon, the Squire of Gothos, and Operation Annihilate. That's a decent 15 out of 27 episodes. Plus it isn't hard to see that Rand would have fit right into This Side of Paradise and Court Martial.

Not so many appearances by yeomen in seasons 2 & 3, although i would think that there are probably two or three episodes per season where Rand would have been a decent addition, especially if the character had been allowed to become more active. Rand as a gangster's moll in a Piece of the Action would have been great fun.
