The Down Under Lounge

[oldman]I remember when Triple J was Double J, hell was 2JJ! I was a mere lad, and the very first song they played was Skyhooks' 'You Just Like Me 'Cos I'm Good in Bed'

On the Latham handshake: very much so. It l;ooked like he was trying to standover poor Little Johnny. After that it all seemed downhill.

I think Howard lost when in his campaign he stumbled down some steps. All seemed over after that.!

Latrham still is an agressive lunatic as subsequent outings have shown. I'm a Labor supporter, biut I think we dodged a bullet there.

Latham frequently looked and sounded like an aggressive lunatic. Amazingly people felt uneasy with the idea such a person would be PM.

It didn't stop the ALP caucus installing Rudd. Twice. :p

Ahh Latham. What could have been. His writing in the AFR is a cut above most commentary, and he has a very sharp mind. He was so passionate about helping everyday people improve their lives, and devoted his career to it. First class honours in Economics...protege of Whitlam...but he just unravelled in the heat of that campaign and destroyed himself with bitterness. A real shame. And yep, a bullet dodged for the country in 2004.

I took the approach I really wanted to Howard gone and if Latham got too much out of control the party would dump him.

Happy Birthday Triple J ... 40 years of great music. Got double J blasting at the moment.

Speaking of Classic Australian Rock music, Because I Love You by The Masters Apprentices is featuring in the ads for Quickbooks that are showing in Canada (and I guess the U.S).

Great, great song. Can't say it enoiugh. Great. Hmm, we might have to work out an Aussie Anthems album. That and Great Southern Land would have to be on it. Maybe Down Under (written byt a Scot) and a Mentals song. Suggestions?

Gina must have leaned against it

A crane has toppled at Gina Rinehart's Roy Hill mine site in Western Australia's Pilbara as it was being evaluated by an inspector.

This is a leaner joke, not a fat joke (though maybe it is both).

Boys light up.
Something by the Oils - hard to choose.

Ooo, yes! And Reckless by the Crawl and ummmmm... Armistice Day? Power and the Passion? King of the Mountain? Don't Wanna Be The One?

Speaking of Gina...

I have a desk calendar that has a little nice quote each day. Examples:

"Sometimes good things fall apart so that better things can fall together" - Marilyn Monroe

"Life must be lived as play" - Plato

Here's a bit of social commentary from Tuesday's:

Certainly made me laugh!

Maybe it was put together by the cheap overseas labour she's so keen on.

She's such a hypocrite though. Rants about people on welfare but she sure as shit doesn't want to pay decent wages and if wasn't for her inheriting her wealth she'd probably be one of those people she goes on about.

Mr. Abbott will be a bit nervous after reading the Fairfax papers today.

I think it's fair to say the ice he is skating on is getting thinner.

Watch this space it seems.

Was looking at the Newspoll figures for June 2010 the other day for discussion on another site.

Rudd's job satifaction dropped 10 point between March and June that year but his job satisfaction, preferred P.M and the government's 2PP were all well above where Abbott and his government stand at moment.

Rudd dropped because he blackflipped on the carbon trading scheme (support for which Abbott had used to knife Turnbull).

That drop occured after nearly 3 years. The Abbott government hasn't been ahead in the polls since December last year.

First newspoll for 2014 had the coalition tied on 50/50 for 2PP but it's been downhill from there.

But it's funny. Appearently Abbott was on 3AW calling for and end to the leadership speculation. Guess after all the shit stirring over Rudd and Gillard he doesn't like being on the recieving end.

And then there's the rumours that his marriage is over and Margie is only with him for appearances.

It's certainly been some fall from grace.

The small business owners that represent the Liberal heartland are just in a state of despair. Business conditions everywhere I am hearing are just atrocious. There's no confidence out there. No certainty. In short, nobody knows which way the ship is headed, and the debt pile just gets bigger and bigger, and consumers get more and more nervous.

I've met Abbott several times, and I must say my impression of him matches what you hear in whispers from his colleagues : that, your politics aside, he is a decent guy. I'm inclined to believe the whispers that few on his side want him to stuff this up. I think this will buy him more time than Rudd may have had. It was said of Rudd that "the only people who like him are those that haven't met him". The opposite seems to be true of Abbott.

That said, will the backbench allow Abbott to march them off a cliff? Not a chance. He likely has six months to explain what this government is about, and any 54-46 Newspolls in the back half of the year will be very dangerous for him. 2015 polling has seen a tick up for the Coalition, but, given the amount of people still in holiday mode, I'm not putting much stock in them.

Prince Philip has been knighted in the Australian Day honours - one of the most stupidest things ever.
