The Down Under Lounge

Just give people a smoker's area, it's not hard. They just want to be seen doing something so they make it a bigger ban, but has having a smoker's area ever actually caused problems? Are they going to ban smoking in rehab places because that would be also utter bullshit.

Problems is that give you smokers areas to puff away in and they don't. They stay right in the same god-dammed spot and light up.

Why the fuck should I have to walk through a cloud of smoke to enter a building because the smokers insist on standing there in what's supposed to be a non-smoking area but won't move an extra few feet away where it is allowed.

Then there's the butts they leave all over the place. A few years back I saw one dumb fuck flick her butt in the dry bushses at tram spot. The bushes were dry becasue it was a heat wave, no rain and there fire bans in effect.

Or smokers who insist on proping open fire doors etc so they can shoot out for a smoke. About 8 years ago the head of mental health in South Australia was shot dead after the killer entered the building through a firedoor that had been wedged open and by-passed security.

Most smokers are polite about it. At least in Queensland. People smoke in the smoking areas. When we're "rude", it's because there isn't anywhere to smoke.

Banning smoking to the road doesn't solve this problem any way. If someone won't move to a designated smoking area 3 feet away, do you really think they're going to walk down to the road? No, they're not. The people who will move are those who do use the designated smoking areas. The ones who aren't causing a problem.

As for dropping buds, they get the same treatment as any litter. If there are bins, people use them. Those that don't, will throw anything on the floor. So unless you want to ban McDonald's because some people will drop their burger wrapper on the floor rather than bin it, you've got double standards. Again, moving to the road won't solve this. If anything it'll make it worst if it isn't a city area with side walk bins.

Punishing all smokers for the sins of a few is ridiculous. If these things are issues, then deal with them. Don't just move the problem to a different location.

It amuses me when people are asking for winfield blue or whatever, how does anyone still have any attachment to brands when all the packages are a dull gold with a gorey photo? I'd imagine the next generation will go in and just ask for the cheapest.

Taste. We buy on taste. Just like you decide which sushi bar to go to based on which tastes best. Someone who doesn't like sushi wouldn't be able to tell the difference, but you can. The cheap ones aren't the nice ones. I've never understood why non-smokers don't understand this.

I'm having a dry new years, I have started my OMG I ATE SO MUCH purge post xmas early. Also, didn't end up going anywhere and can't be assed. Spent the whole evening on WoW drinking tea

So uhh.. cheers!

Australis's evening sounds perfect.

I watched the Countdown special earlier, that was amazing. When we do TV right, we are world beaters.

My new years was less than exciting. I had to sit down and have a heart to heart with my mother. I haven't even touched so much as a glass of wine. Less exciting than my usual Wednesday night.

On the up side, I am officially "out" to my folks.

I'm not one for fireworks, but I think I'd have preferred to brave the crowds.

Actually, I think I have some vodka in the fridge. Maybe I can still get into the New Year spirit. I might find something good on netflix and enjoy bringing in the new year in my usual anti-social way.

So today is going to be 39C in Melbourne. Kinder glad that I am going today. Hopefully Newcastle will be cooler.

My aunt was complaining about the weather in Adelaide. Then some-one pointed out the temps in the low 40s over the weekend.

She has learned the error of her ways.

Only good thing about hot weather is gets the washing real dry, real quick.

^ I know that tomorrow will be worse, and likely inland will be hotter too.

Currently at southern cross. Looking forward to getting on A/C train. Thankfully NSW is cooler at the moment.

Also when I got off the train the city today the whole station was blowing through with a HOT wind and I was ridiculously happy. I love that kind of thing. HOT WIND!!

So, teacake, you like it hot. <waggles eyebrows>

On a more serious note, ABC News website says the fires near Adelaide are extremely dangerous, and dozens of homes may have been lost.

I found too hot yesterday in Melbourne. Walking to the bus stop was very sweaty. Like the weather is much better in Newcastle today.

Yes I DO but bushfires and thinking about bushfires makes me start fantasizing about the tropics where I can get it hot but not a fucking tinderbox. It's not overly dry here this year, rained a lot for all the "spring" where we were all wearing our coats up until seemingly a few weeks ago. I wish we could just transform all the bushfire areas into tropical rainy ones.

We had like a week of mid 40's a few years back, up to 47. I feel like that permanently altered my brain and I don't even notice 40 anymore and 30 is just pleasant.

Apparently there's fires in Vic atm too. Here's hoping nothing terrible happens.

Cool change is coming in right now.
