So this is the Aus thread to natter about Our Stuff. Abbott, beer, woeful tv, bushfires and dramatic and hilarious events.

Thanks to Australis for the name aaaaaaand..

I love lamingtons though I haven't had one for a while.

I also love Anzac biscuits, Tim Tams, and pavolovas but I believe the New Zealanders have tried to lay claim the invention of pavolovas.

I thought that I never would hate a politician more than Abbott but recently Hockey and Morrison have narrowed the gap.

This old guy sums up my reaction to Abbott

An Australian friend brought me some kangaroo jerky when she visited. I didn't like it, but I don't like any jerky. I'd be interested to try non-jerkied roo.

Question for people, Australian and otherwise, who've tried both Vegemite and Marmite. I love Marmite, but didn't like the Vegemite the same friend brought over. However I've heard many people say they think it tastes the same. What's your opinion?

They don't taste the same. Marmite is beefier in flavour. There are also different kinds of marmite, the NZ marmite is not the same thing as the UK one. The NZ one just went back into production this year, the factory was destroyed in the Christchurch earthquake and NZ marmite was going for 80 dollars a jar on ebay. I know all this because an NZ woman I talk to regularly updated me on the NZ marmite apocalypse.

We also have promite. Which is more like marmite. It is sweeter and gooeyer.

I posted this elsewhere, my version of perfect vegemite toast. Most people obsess over it being totally even but I like the butter only partially melted and the vegemite uneven and thick.

I prefer promite to vegemite or marmite, there is also the Dick Smith brand whatever it is called.

Talking about Dick Smith - what is he up to nowadays. haven't heard any mention of him for ages.

It's called aussie-mite. I think. I thought it was pretty good.

I don't know what Dick is doing, I remember a helicopter, antartica, and maybe paying big money to rescue some hostage?

    His stores are horrible.

Jesus. All of the things that end in Mite are disgusting.

I know they are not the same, but they are. In the sense that they are all fucking disgusting.

All I can say is that I've wanted to visit since I was ten years old and saw what are to this day are two of my favorite movies, Priscilla, Queen of the Desert and Strictly Ballroom. Please let me come to your country and go on a road trip in drag and fall in love with a dancer with a great torso and 90s hair. And we'll all pretend your country isn't riddled with spiders the size of my face.

^Well, that was that time in the late 80s/very early 90s when Australia (or at least, Aussie stereotypes) became sort of a fad in the US...did that hit UK too? Was it that Paul Hogan movie that started it?

Sadly if you really did that in the outback you'd probably get bashed.

And the super big spiders are totally safe.

I've wanted to visit since I saw the Mad Max movies when I was a teenager. Please let me come to your country and attack its oil refineries with a horde of bikers in leather fetish gear. :p

(I do have relatives in both Sydney and Perth actually, and also one or two in New Zealand, so I should probably make it out that way at some point.)

Crocodile Dundee - a movie known to induce "cultural cringe" in many Australians.

As to the Miss Chicken's original post, I believe a true Lammington doesn't have anything filling over the the sponge.

But yes to Tim-Tams (though I try to be a good boy and resist the urge to by them when shopping :)
