The Down Under Lounge

Hullo Hobartian!

I wonder how the Indonesian version is different - just cheaper ingredients, or do they like a different flavour?

The same food always tastes different in other countries. They'd be going for a different tastes to appeal to the locals.

I'm from Brisbane.

Were they these Cheese Tim Tam's I've heard absolutely nothing about since accidentally seeing it online several years ago and now just checked that they actually exist and it wasn't a fever dream because sometimes it's a fever dream?

No they weren't the cheese Tim Tams which I knew nothing about until i looked up about Indonesian tim Tim about half an hour ago.

The chocolate on the Indonesian Tim Tams was much softer than the Australian Tim Tam and i think they were sweeter.

Did anyone have the misfortune to try the recent, shortly lived, peanut butter tim tams? They were absolutely disgusting, smelled terrible (!!) and tasted foul. Apparently they had no actual peanut butter in them?

I miss chilli tim tams, those were awesome.

There was also once Coconut Slice, same as mint slice only coconut cream. I loved those SO MUCH I actually wrote to the company when they disappeared, got a "sorry not everything works out.." letter back which gave me no hope and indeed they have never returned.

Wait. That was insensitive. Perhaps you have a disease and are unable to eat tim tams. I myself have no sweet tooth and will go years without eating them, though as a matter of cultural pride I will of course defend the eating of such things. And if Coconut Slices had continued to be made I would be 20kg heavier.

I must confess I have never eaten a Tim Tam.

I'm not sure I understand this statement. It makes no sense.

I am not allowed Tim Tams. :( I should start a gluten-free Tim Tam campaign.

They'd sell and arnotts would make lots of money because gluten free always means 3 times the price. At least.

So where does everyone here live? I somehow get the impression I'm the only one from Sydney.

Originally from Adelaide (trekkbbs has had a couple of South Australians over the years) now living in Ontario Canada.

And I can atest that life in Canada isn't bad for Australans.

Tim Tams and Vegemite can be found. The former is around $3.50 to $4 though the later can be expensive ($6 - 7 for a small jar).

Can't get Australian lamb so have to settle for the stuff from across the Tasman.

And whish they had Cottees cordial here.

Today i bought some Arnott's Tim Tams from the Reject Shop for only 95c. I opened the packet up and ate one at the bus-stop and it was vile. I looked more carefully at the packet and noticed that it was the Indonesian version of Tim Tams. Gross.

Edited to answer eyeresist's question - I live in Hobart.
I saw them today, the packaging seemed weird so I didn't bother. Glad I didn't, thanks for being the tester. :)

Dark chocolate Tim Tams (available from Woolworths) are the bomb.

NSW Central Coast. Plus another poster is in Newcastle, I'll let him talk for himself when he posts next.

Marc, Olivia Newton John used to have an Aussie shop of some kind in LA, maybe you can order online from them. I think they have Vegemite, Cottees, Weet Bix and Tim Tams, amongst others.

I'm not that desperate (plus the Canadian customs people and the duties are borderline facist at the best of times).

If I really wanted the cottees (I doubt the tim tams and vegemite would end up being any cheaper and there's a wheatbix clone here) my step mother lives in L.A and my day is usually flitting between there and Adelaide so I could arrange something that way.

But will keep it in mind in case the withdrawl gets too much :)

Last time I came back from Australia I brought a couple of bottles of cottees, cadbury chocolates and Milo :)

I'm that guy from Newcastle. I know that there are a few people from Sydney around the board. Some have disappearred over the years, while others are quiet. I do go to Sydney and Melbourne for conventions during the year. Already know about the other guest for the next oztrek con next year. Besides Linda Park being there.

On the tim tams - so many yummy ones.

Sooooo... this weather. Bit out there. Lightning strikes all around me yesterday.

But climate change isn't a thing. Our PM said so.

Have a look at the ABC News site, they have some fantastic pictures of the storms, some of which I snagged tio use as wallpapers.

Some of those photos look like something from a sci-fi movie

Why would I eat a Tim Tam when I can eat a choc chip cookie (or 20)?
Actually, I think my chocolate eating days are behind me unless my health issues miraculously clear up.

Can I get some input here?

I cannot agree with Alan Jones, because, well, Alan Jones. But this, if it is true, is fucking shameful:

http://www.2gb.com/audioplayer/80496#kCg13BYbUvq0fK4P.01

And the next question, what can we do? Where do we start? Fucking banks. One reason I think little of Keating, his moves deregulating I believe started this.

Fuck.

I need clear input. Real or not? Is it this bad? If so, why haven't we been clearly told?

Fuck.
