The Down Under Lounge

macloudt I hope those poor people got some huge freebies out of that.

I have had quite a few pieces of mail and once a package go through Austria on the way here, mailed from North America.

^ I have no idea what that means.

There's some funny ads here for realestate.com.au, with a confused Ahnult trying to buy a house in :"Austria" He really does have a flair for comedy (as taught to him by Lucille Ball).

Libs not doing well in Victoria. A sign of future things?

I hope so.

Queensland is the next state to go to the polls - early next year and Newman is for the fight of his life.

Lastest poll has the LNP trailling on 2PP 49/51 and there's the prediction based on polling hin his seat that Newman will get turfed from Parliament even if the LNP government hangs on.

Also read while the Tasmanian premier is preferred to his opposition counterpart, the Libs there have taken a massive drop in the opinion polls.

The Libs seem to be doing okay poll wise in N.S.W.

I have strong doubts about the NSW Libs, they want to sell the poles & wires, which isn't popular. Also the previously mentoioned rail line closure in Newcastle. Labor can take it if they can just pull themselves out of the nire, cut the dead wood, and run a campaign like Vic Labor did.

Well the Shooters party has come out and said if they win the balance of power at the next NSW state election they'll block the Libs plans to privatise the power assets.

I am a staunch labor supporter and I don't have a lot of confidence that the Libs will be tossed next election in Queensland. Labor has 9 members of parliament to the Liberals 89. The result is that Labor doesn't have enough of a political presence. Right now they're an after thought that no one really takes too seriously.

My hope is that the Liberals take enough of the hit that next election Labor will be a force to be reckoned with.

Thought I'd be safe quoting bookies' odds in a thread populated by Australians

Anyway, they are an excellent pointer to how things will play out on Election Day.

So what do they say about some of the things mentioned here recently?

QLD election
L/N 1.35
ALP 3.10
Ie : the bookies think there's a 70% chance ALP loses.

Seat of Ashgrove - Newman win?
No 1.45
Yes 2.60
Ie : 64% chance Mr Newman will be watching from the gallery after the election.

NSW election
Coalition 1.10
ALP 6.50
Ie : there is a 15% chance of a change of government.

Federal election
Coalition 1.60
ALP 2.30
Ie : the bookies say the odds are 60/40 in favour of the Libs getting a second term.

I should put in a bet for Liberal win. That way no matter what happens I win.

Ah, never used bookies. Should have guessed.

And I'm a bit more optimistic about Labor's chances federally, if the Libs have more weeks like last week Maybe I should put a bet on now...

Oh I agree the odds aren't that great of Labor taking office afte the drubbing they took in 2012. But even to get to that point in the opinion polls and where the Premier could be unseated but his party office is unprecedented.

And if the toxicity out the federal government continues the chances of a labor win will increase.

Pyne has also dropped interest on HECS fees. That should never have come up in the first place, when other countries have worked out how to do free tertiary education. How hard is it to figure out? The smarter and more qualified the people, the better quality of work, the a greater GDP. Yeah, that's a bit simplistic, but I thiunk it's true, as long as you're not getting a MA in basket weaving.

Well, the Seventies music renaissance was basically done by a bunch of people who didn't have to go out job hunting and instead practiced all day "sitting round on the dole". Things are never quite as clear cut as conservative commentators make out. That could safely apply across all arts. Is that what you mean?

What is being done to th ABC appalls me. Bring back in-house production. And stop making dreary bloody movies and TV shows about deperate people. I don't care how well it was done, I loathewd what I saw of The Slap. All those people needed a slap.

I'd be interested in what anyone has to say about The Slap or movies like Candy.

What I meant was, the basket weaving. You can't give out free science education and not give out free arts, or you can but you're making quite a statement doing so. Not that I think there is necessarily a better way to go either way.

From the little I saw of The Slap, I thought it was exceptionally well made for an Australian production. Not my sort of thing but some people like it. I mean, who is watching The Good Wife? Or those plodding murder dramas on SBS?

I want the ABC to make another series of Outland.

(Eps 2 and 3 were the weakest, but then it really picked up in the second half.)
