The Delta Flyers now covering DS9

You're surprised she didn't keep up with the goings-on at a job she left under less than ideal circumstances?

Maybe surprised was the wrong word, I was just trying to say I'm very curious what her thoughts will be & looking forward to them.

Which brings me to my next question. What guest hosts have they had on the show so far?

I listened to the "Duet" episode which had Nana (which was a must!) Have they had any other other DS9 actors on yet?

No other actors besides Nana, but they had director Jim Conway on recently.

Did the Voyager episodes have Voyager guest stars?
They did. My favorite was Kate Mulgrew calling in for "Threshold", though I think that might have been in the bonus material? She wasn't there the whole time, sometimes they'd have the Voyager actors just pop in for a phone call, not necessarily the whole episode.

There was one where they impulsively decided they had to call Bob Picardo to ask him some question. They catch him on a bike ride, and during the talk the distraction caused him to have a (minor) accident.

Ethan Phillips was there for all of "Homestead" - but he hadn't actually rewatched the episode IIRC, so it was a little weird, it really was more Robbie and Garrett explaining to Ethan what the episode had been.

They went big on "Bride Of Chaotica", that might have had more than one guest for that one?

Kim Rhodes, who played Lyndsey Ballard, was on for "Ashes To Ashes" and I loved the way she talked about approaching the character and her experiences on set.

Robert Beltran was on for... "Resolutions" maybe?

Martha Hackett was a fabulous guest host at some point, perhaps for... "Basics, Part II"? She was telling stories of how she learned of her fate on the show, and no one is saying a word to her, but every script revision has a different character dying at the end until the final version at last settled on her.

Oh, Roxann Dawson for "Extreme Risk"! (I think) She was fabulous all throughout that one, such insightful comments.

Aside from Jennifer Lien and Jeri Ryan, every Voyager actor was on, multiple times. These are the only ones I can recall off the top of my head.

Thanks.

Jeri Ryan never went on? That's a shame.

Well, having started out by listening to a few episodes with both Armin and Terry, then listening to a few episodes with just Armin, then just Terry, I can definitively say I vastly prefer it when both of them are on at the same time.

No reason why they can' t make that happen more often!

There is. At least one of the DS9 actors, and possibly both of them, don't have enough availability to be full-time hosts. And they've never said this explicitly, but I gather figuring out the revenue split as they transitioned to a four-host model was quite difficult. (How could it not be? There's so many parts to this operation now: the merchandising, the adds, the meet-ups, etc)

I love and prefer when it's all four of them too, but I have gotten the strong sense that it was a large challenge for them to bring this into existence at all.

Four ways is a very easy way to split an amount of money.

That said, I'm thinking it's highly likely that Robbie and Garrett, as the "owners" of the podcast, rake in more per episode than their DS9 co-hosts.

I'm sure it's a very logistical nightmare and a big time commitment for all of time. I'm super impressed that Robbie and Garrett finished all of Voyager which must have taken them almost four years and then just kept things going.

Do any of them have the Deep Space Nine Companion? Anything good in Memory Alpha comes from it, and ISB uses it for all his podcast appearances.

It is an easy way to split money, but it doesn't really apply to a situation where the four of them are not doing equal amounts of work. That was my point - the easy solution does not fit this particular structure.

To take one item, the merchandising. It seems like Garrett and the two producers do the lions share of designing those products and administering the store and fulfilling the orders, but obviously Armin and Terry's involvement is essential to there continuing to be new DS9 merchandise for them to sell at all. So how does that pie get carved up? It just seems to me like the kinds of questions that takes some time to hash out, before you can close a deal that everyone feels good about, that you're also confident will work for four years.

I don't think the Companion has ever come up, though it seems Garrett has gotten great at really learning the MA entries before they record the pod. Though one of the superfans at the higher Patron levels should definitely tell them about it, I feel like they're having more and more fun with their "lets check the script!" moments.

As I said myself.

Garrett and Robbie are the "owners" of the show. Terry and Armin are basically hired guns/freelancers/employees. So it would be very easy for them to determine how much they were going to be paid and all of that would have been settled ahead of time, obviously.

Maybe they only have so much in their budget for those four hosted shows. Which is too bad, but understandable.

I started listening to the Delta Flyers back in the Voyager days. It has just started Season 3 when I first tuned in and I've stuck with it since. And I'm not someone who usually listens to podcasts. I probably enjoy the episodes with Armin most tbh, his intellectual insights like the entomology is interesting.

Etymology. Entomology is the study of insects.

Funny bit from the latest episode (Sanctuary):

Armin and everyone seem to think Dabo girls are also prostitutes. Uh, they're not. Armin recalls episodes where Dabo girls were contracted to have sex. Uh, yeah, with Quark, not with the customers. And Sisko put a stop to it the first time it came up and, in the second instance, Quark backed away from it. But that was only for Quark himself (appalling though it obviously was.)

The holo-suites are for sex. The Dabo girls are there to spin the wheel and distract the gamblers into making bad decisions.

They also all buy into the notion that Ferengi ears are genitals as opposed to them simply being an erogenous zone. Which irks me.

---

I also found it weird that they all talk multiple times about the "racism" exhibited by certain characters...and yet none of them so much as blink as they themselves mock the Skrreea.

Lastly, I'm sooo tired of them conflating the show and the real world when it comes to characters vs actors. When someone is mean to Quark, they're not being mean to Armin.

My posts on this pod are always of the whining variety. I'm aware of this, but I don't feel the need to post about the things that don't annoy me. Anything I don't mention was something I was fine with. ;)

Exactly. The Ferengi also have actual penises. The ears are very sensitive, but they're not genitals.

The characters do exhibit a lot of casual racism on the show, but, that's in-universe. They're goofing on real-world make-up choices. It may seem inconsistent, but it's not, really.

Yeah, Garrett keeps going on about that. It's weird. Dude, you're an actor, it's make-believe. Also, Quark looks so utterly different than Armin, you can't use your imagination??

Haha. Noted. I had another comment on this episode, but I forgot what it was!

Well, I'm gonna take full credit for this, but the hosts definitely now seem to be using both of the resources I pointed out: Memory Alpha and the script archive.

In the latest episode, Garrett reads some episode trivia which is clearly from MA and Robbie has the script in front of him and references the fact that he has "all the scripts" now. And they refer to the script a few times (as I said they should!!) to determine if certain bits were scripted or not.

So, Delta Flyers listeners.......you're welcome!

How could Armin have spent seven years making the show and thinking his Dabo girls were hookers? Where was that ever suggested? “Dabo” is the name of a game, not a euphuism for…well.

As you say, there was the early episode where Quark tried it on with a Dabo girl by putting something in her contract, but Sisko put a stop to that.

I don’t get how he could think that. Or anyone else. Maybe it’s the holosuite confusion?

There were two instances of that, one the episode you referenced and then in "Profit and Lace" he basically blackmails a dabo girl into sex, but then changes his mind at the end of the episode.

So Armin seemed to think that, because of these two specific instances of sexual blackmail, Dabo girls were also prostitutes in addition to their "other duties."

Sigh.
