The Delta Flyers now covering DS9

Drinking game. Take a shot every time:

Armin says, "If I may"
Terry says, "One hundred percent!"
Garrett says, "is what it is" at the end of a sentence.

I don't have one yet for Robbie. :)
Robbie's can be, "this is such a beautiful shot."

Or you can make a game where you take a drink every time Garrett laughs at his own jokes and no one else does.

But you'd be dead within six minutes.

In the most recent episode, Garrett reads from the DS9 Companion. So I'm not actually sure if they're using MA or just the book, but at least they have access to trivia and behind-the-scenes info.

damn too bad they couldn’t get Andrew Robinson to do Garak based episodes
Who says they couldn't?

They're only midway through Season 2. Most of Garak's biggest episodes are still in the future.

They got Nana for "Duet" and hopefully it won't be her only appearance.

I really do hope that they are able to get some additional guest stars and no reason to think they won't try.

TV actors are not fans. And they don't have to be.

It's not their job to pore over the lore, rewatch episodes endlessly, engage in debates/conversations with friends or online about the show. Nor collect the merchandise, read the supplemental material, attend the conventions and basically absorb every fact and function about the shows they're working on.

It's not required and it's not even remotely essential to their job, which is to know their own characters and their lines and deliver the best performance possible. Hell, some actors are even skilled enough craftspeople that they can literally float through a project (particularly in the sci-fi/fantasy genre) with only a dim understanding of what's actually going on in the story.

That is perfectly okay!

I can imagine few things more wrongheadedly stupid and cringe-inducing then when a vocal contingent of mentally-impaired Star Wars "fans" dragged an Acolyte actor recently because he accidentally swapped the names Anakin and Luke when he was describing his experience watching the films.

Hell, he could have never seen SW in his life and it wouldn't have made him ineligible or in any way "wrong" for the part.

So please understand this is where I'm coming from. The actors get a pass. They deserve it. That said, it's been amusing to listen to episodes of "The Delta Flyers" and see where these actors, who know Star Trek, but only from their very specific and narrow points of view, didn't quite grasp the full picture.

But, honestly, I just heard Armin Shimmerman make arguably the dumbest comment about DS9 of all time.

And it was one that someone in this thread referred to earlier.

I'm going back and listening to episodes from Season 1. And I got to "The Forsaken." And Armin commented that a supporting character was wearing an outfit very similar to Kira's, but a different color.

Which broke Armin's brain. He wasn't sure if Kira was wearing a uniform or "her own clothes." He went on to say, "Why would she have a uniform, she's a terrorist?" Uh.....she was a terrorist, Armin. And then he says, "well, she's a major now, but a major of what?" Sadly, Garrett and Robbie were unable to answer this question.

Now, in fairness, Armin didn't have a lot of scenes with Kira which dealt with her job. But he should have been more than aware that, in any given episode, there are probably at least ten Bajoran extras (very often in Quark's!) who all dressed in identical outfits. He should have had at least the baseline knowledge that Bajoran military officers and Starfleet personnel were working together on DS9.

The fact that he had no clue what Kira's job was, who she worked for, or what she was wearing is just so.......insanely myopic, I just couldn't get my head around it.

Come on, Armin! Do better!

Dammit, Jim, he's an actor, not a writer.
He knows who he works for and what motivates him, that's what he has to know.

i did say he didn't have to have a comprehensive, encyclopediac deep knowledge of the lore.

But, yeah, he actually should have at least the most basic, rudimentary understanding of the main characters he interacted with on a daily basis.

I'm curious how this months assignments are going to shake out.

They already said Armin was doing "Whispers", which makes sense (Quark has one scene, but Dax has even less -- one line of voiceover, one shot of her in the background not-speaking). And Terry will obviously be on "Playing God."

But "Shadowplay" has Dax in the A story, and it's the only time (I think) that Dax and Odo were ever paired, it would be a shame to not hear Terry's take on this one. But "Shadowplay" has a nice role for Quark in the B story, whereas Quark doesn't appear in "Paradise" at all.

Maybe "Shadowplay" will be another all-hands-on-deck outing.

EDIT: They announced at the end of today's ep that Armin will be handling "Paradise." Glad they did it that way! I'm looking forward to getting Terry's take on "Shadowplay."

I find "Paradise" such a trash ep, I wonder if they will be shredding it next week.

I do wish Terry and Armin could be together more often. And I hope for more guest stars in the future. Would love to have Sid and Cirroc on there, as appropriate, and even Colm would be a huge get for a quality O'Brien episode (lots to choose from!)

I don't hate Paradise, but it's certainly a mediocre outing at best. I do friggin' hate Playing God, though. I may skip that one entirely.

I wonder if Nicole would come on at some point during season 7 (I'm assuming they've all become friends over the years on the convention circuit and there's no lingering discomfort, but who knows, maybe I'm totally wrong on that). Terry mentioned early on how weird she anticipates it being to watch those episodes for the first time. It'll be interesting to hear what she has to say, when we finally get there in a few years.

They should just ditch Terry and bring in Nicole for season 7.

But would Nikki have any interest in doing so? I have no idea.

EDIT: To clarify, obviously Nicole deBoer is very gracious with engaging with fans of Star Trek. But would she be interested in this podcast, is what I mean. I'm a total nerd for Star Trek, but I couldn't get into Delta Flyers at all. Just seems not particularly insightful.

Well, the "Whispers" episode broke my giddy, new-toy enthusiasm for this series.

Man, what a snooze fest. Totally anodyne, dull conversation without a scintilla of interesting insight or analysis from anyone.

And I friggin' love Whispers, but, man, what a drag this episode was.

I'll still keep listening, but I'll probably skip the next few weeks, as they are all episodes I'm not generally a fan of. I am looking forward to hearing the Voyager guys' take on "The Maquis" two-parter.

But, boy, I was bored to tears with the latest episode.

I haven't enjoyed the podcast much, given that they go scene by scene. However, I would be very interested in Terry talking about Shadowplay. It's mostly confirmed that it was Rene who gave her a hard time those first seasons. Hopefully, she will be forthcoming with the details.
