Spoilers The Controversial Star Wars Opinion Thread

its still crazy that star wars episode 7 8 and 9 make a buttload of money but were still the most controversial star wars movies in star wars history because the sequel trilogy were made by disney and not really by lucus films
Lucasfilm still made the movies, they were just released by Disney.
i wonder what would have happened if george lucas stayed with lucas films and did make the sequel trilogys with disney
I might be mistaken, but I believe the only reason he sold to Disney was because he was retiring, so if he stuck around, then I don't think he would have sold it.

i do not remember the prequels trilogy being most controversial in star wars history
The prequels were hated back in the day. It's only been in the past decade that people have begun thinking of them in a positive light.
maybe he did stay with lucasfilms on a alternate earth where he never left and it was him that bought disney
I doubt there's any world in the multiverse where Lucas bought Disney. Just think about how much money that would cost. If I had that much money, I'd be more likely to do the Gene Roddenberry Zephram Cochrane thing of settling on a nice tropical island populated with gorgeous naked women than buying and running one of the largest studios on the planet.

In general, yes. Even by many in that younger generation that they were supposedly aimed at - back then and now.

I say this as someone who is glad they are being looked at in a more positive light in more recent times... they are still bad films. The mental gymnastics, the loyalty to George, the years of additional ancillary material, just the sheer wanting them them to better than they were/are, the 'secret' genius reasons why they are 'good' et al, the running-down of other material in the GFFA in an attempt to try and make the PT seem 'better'... none of which make up for... they were simply bad films.

Though cool for those that always enjoyed them - or enjoying them in more recent times. :techman:

This. Bad films are bad films. Other films don't change that.

If you enjoy them, that's great. One of my favorite films has a 14% on Rotten Tomatoes. I don't care. It's a fun movie. It's not a good movie.

If you compare the prequels to the acting and zany plots of things like the Flash Gordon serials they're inspired by, they're a lot more fun to watch. There have been times I've switched the TV to black and white to add a bit of that serial pizazz to the prequels.

Then you missed out. Between the accusations of Lucas taking childhoods, the calls for them being expunged from the canon, the abusive language towards actors and Lucas eventually retiring because he felt he couldn't please people I'll call that controversial.

The prequels were not well organized and struggled with critical feedback. It was not loved.

well back in 1999 2002 and i guess 2008 the internet was low tech at the time

remember there was dial up and high speed was just starting

I was around from 2002 onwards. Yes, it was dual up then moved to higher speed. I was also in college in 02 and attending conventions and Star Wars groups, in addition to posting on the Force dot net forums. I had several podcasts that I listened to and posted about, plus fan films made.

Yes, I saw how the prequels were received. Spoiler alert: not well.

They weren't loved but I think they also weren't really hated, Jar-Jar Binks and the Anakin/Padme love story were pretty disdained/hated, and in general but to lesser degree the acting was criticized as too stiff, but most people were able to both think that and think that aside from that they were pretty OK to good, pretty enjoyable.

Calling it a "rape my childhood" movie doesn't say "Ah, it's just ok."

I remember detesting the 2008 Clone Wars movie and the Ahsoka concept. Now I find the first tolerable and the second downright exciting and a boon to the franchise.

Taking as in taking them to a seedy motel and boinking them?
Yes. Or ruining them. Or destroying things.

Seriously. It was rather over the top, and betrays a certain belief of the infallibility of Lucas that was somehow shattered, as though the OT was perfectly crafted from the mind of Lucas.
