The celebration of the 50th is not good enough

Great, in no particular order: Ascendancy, Panic, Frontiers
Crap: Risk

Special Mention: Talon, which though not in the Trek universe, was clearly inspired by Starfleet Battles and Federation Commander, and is ABSOLUTELY AMAZING (as in, if you liked Starfleet Battles, you will prefer this)

Risk is crap!? You take that back!

Also, thanks for the suggestions. Going to have to check them out.

Because mainstream audiences don't give a crap about Star Trek when they have Star Wars, Marvel, DC, GoT, and even Harry Potter which are more exciting and relevant.

I don't watch regular tv anymore, so I have no idea what kind of celebration I might have missed. But I did find it very wear that the 'official' fiftieth anniversary trailer released the other day completely ignored half the franchise. I suppose it had something to do with it being released by Paramount instead of cbs, since the other 3 series never made it to the big screen. Yet it did list all the series dvds at the end... (And really, if that was actually a problem, then CBS should've released the trailer instead)
I saw that video on an Amazon product listing... Basically more of a trailer for the latest repackaged TOS and TNG, with a bit of Khan DE in there. So current product placement. Like you say not really representative of 50 years of Trek.

To celebrate the 50th I programmed my own marathon in celebration. A midnight screening of The Motion Picture Director's Edition, from DVD obviously... as much as I wish there were a Blu ray upscale or HD do-over. Both TOS pilots followed the next day, with the first episodes of TNG, DS9, VOY & ENT. The Voyage Home, a showing of "The Man Trap", ending with "Relics" featuring Scotty ending up in the 24th Century. I can't really pretend to not be disappointed in the mainstream TV's lack of celebration, but I heartily recommend fans with shiny disc collections, or just downloading ability, schedule their own little viewing parties and pick & choose whatever they see fit.

I don't know. I'm still thinking about being offended. Hopefully the pieces at least looked cool.

Risk Star Trek

Star Trek Ascendancy (small, but there are lots of them)

Star Trek Frontiers (larger, but only these four and four Borg cubes)

Star Trek Panic (just the cardboard)

Frankly, I don't think any of them have high quality components, although the cardboard Enterprise from Panic is really cool looking, especially as it takes damage. Otherwise, I would give my recommendations based on gameplay. If you are looking for a 4X game in which you compete against the Klingons and Romulans, go for Ascendancy. If you want more exploration, and are accustomed to long, advanced games, go for Frontiers. If you want a cooperative game that has the fun of TOS, go for Panic. If you don't have a lot of money, you can print out and assemble Star Trek: The Dice Game (free pnp).

If you like Risk, Risk Europe is supposed too be good.

I thought of this thread when I was at the grocery store today and saw THREE Star Trek magazines celebrating the 50th.

I've converted the images in this post to links.

Don't hotlink. If you're posting a picture, host it on your own site/Photobucket, whatever. DON'T just link to another site. They hate that.

Yeah, I've seen those miniatures. I'll concede that the Risk version looks pretty dumb. I just like Risk on the general principle ;)

What I really want to get is Settlers of Catan Star Trek edition. I also can't think of the game, but there was one for the Kelvin universe that uses the Action Clix figures that looked interesting.

I'm not a Risk fan--too many reasons to list--but I will admit that some games sold under the Risk moniker can be quite good. 2015's Risk Star Wars Edition is an excellent game (although it is more a reskin of the old Avalon Hill game Queen's Gambit). At $50 MSRP, I think the Star Trek 50th Anniversary is questionable.

Are you thinking of Expeditions, designed by Reiner Knizia? It looks good, and people whom have played it like it, but they think that it hasn't a lot of replay value.

Catan Trek also looks good, but I suspect it won't come back into print. Mayfair sold it to Asmodee, who have spun Catan into its own "studio," but no part of Asmodee owns a license to Trek, as far as I can tell.

DC? Sorry, no. Beyond was a much better movie than Batman V Superman, regardless which one did better at the box office.

Sorry to hear that you are not a Risk fan. I would send you an original style and teach you to play because it is that fun for me, but to each their own. It takes a long time to play.

But, I agree that I saw the Star Trek Risk and was not impressed either. The pieces are lackluster, adds nothing to the concept of the game or the franchise, so it's kind of forgettable.

Which is too bad.

I like the version of risk where you can only continuously move as many armies as dice you roll, and moving any more than that is the fortification that ends your turn. Brings more strategy than "build big army, kill everyone in one turn."

Well if Paramount CBS would stop hoarding all the rights so rigidly maybe there'd be something to celebrate.
They're not "hoarding." They own the rights.

Tonight should have been the night. CBS and/or NBC should be airing *something* tonight for the 50th. :/
Fat chance of NBC airing a special when CBS holds the television rights.

It would be nice if, after fifty years, a representative of NBC management would formally apologize for the cancellation; but with the caveat that if they hadn't the franchise wouldn't be what it is today.
:wtf: Why the heck should they do that? Star Trek wasn't pulling in the ratings and frankly was lucky to get as many seasons as it did. Besides, anyone who was responsible for the cancellation is either dead or long gone from NBC. And as you point out, if NBC hadn't pulled the plug, we likely wouldn't have had the revival we got. So I don't see what in the world a "formal apology" would do for anyone.

And perhaps another reason that we haven't seen as much for the 50th as we did on previous anniversaries is that a lot of the people who produced TOS are gone now. Nimoy, Kelley, Doohan, Barrett, Roddenberry, Whitney, most of the writers and directors... A special featuring the surviving cast might come off as more depressing than anything.

Heroes & Icons, the current home of all of the old Trek shows, just did a day of Trek-related programming this past Sunday. Sister network Decades will be showing much of the same programming tomorrow.
And ME TV showed Man Trap on Sat night and The Cage pilot right after that.

Hmmm. I'm suddenly kind of amazed that we haven't gotten a Gunsmoke reboot. I mean didn't that run on TV and radio for a thousand years or something?
