The celebration of the 50th is not good enough

Not a great deal they can do in the absence of a show.

We got a good film and at least some news about the new series, with more to come. That's more than I'd have expected as of the 40th anniversary.

I've seen quite a bit of media coverage in Australia through feature articles about the anniverary, plus a channel is screening the first nine movies this week (which, unfortunately, can be counterproductive - a colleague had The Final Frontier as her first experience of Trek, and won't be coming back for more...).

A special like the 30th anniversary would have been nice, though.

"A friendly"?
Oh for heaven's sake. SMH

You're warning me because I didn't remember the rules from four years ago, made an innocent mistake and suggested your approach could be more diplomatic?

Seriously?????????? You think I started this thread to break the board rules?????

Common sense please.

TOM is right. He gave you a break, and instead of appreciating it, you decided to make a scene.

I suggest you quit while you're behind.

I knida agree...even Star Trek's offical Twitter page event is a bit lackluster. :(

I think we're getting quite a lot, all things considered. I can't wait to see the new series, I loved Star Trek Beyond, and I've been reading lots of interviews and articles about Star Trek's legacy.

Yes, I appreciate that, but this is the 21st Century and is Brits would be aware of any event or production CBS and/or Paramount are staging because, ya know, Internet...;)

I don't think my complaint is ill informed...and I am not sure why you would defend an underwhelming celebration in any event.

I don't remember the Beeb doing much for DW's 40th Anniversary, when the show was off the air, sure we knew it was coming offit's long hiatus or uncancelled depending on how generous you are feeling. Did we get much for ST 40th Anniversary? Nothing really springs to mind but I could simply have forgotten. We got two speical episodes for the 30th (when ST was in production), a film for the 25th with a new show on the way for the 25th.

I was simply being pragmatic with my comment.

I'm kinda hoping the Discovery people will post a new picture of the ship, or concept art of the bridge or something to commemorate the day.

As for the 50th overall, Beyond was amazing and Discovery is well on it's way. A new movie and a new series? I'm not sure how you can top that.

The previous anniversary celebrations were big because there was demand for it. The demand isn't there anymore (and it's not the job of an anniversary special to create demand).

You shouldn't have to read the rules to know that mouthing off to a mod is a stupid idea.

Entertainment Weekly and TV guide both had cover stories. Just all the usual stuff, but it was there.

As has been point out, Star Trek is hardly main stream anymore, it's a niche market with a moderate sized fan following.

Well if Paramount CBS would stop hoarding all the rights so rigidly maybe there'd be something to celebrate. Keeping it fresh and central focus. While i do understand protecting the image and profits, I think attacking Fan movies, fan art and sometimes fanfic is a bit much. Allowing imagination to be born from Trek could reveal some amazing potential writers, directors, and producers than they'd ever find through an agency and they wouldn't have to pay and agents fee because they found the talent on their own or word of mouth. they're so stuck up that one guy who was it? said we, the fans, don't know what's best? That's a bold assumption.

Or, Look at Star Wars. It has gone insane with self promotion. Wasn't it bought by Disney? Anyway my son (6) has underwear. I don't see any Spock drawers out there. A pity.

:guffaw:

If you were on Gallifrey Base during Doctor Who's 50th you would have seen the same whining and complaining. Not enough celebration of the 50th of Doctor Who. To listen to some of them they believed there should have been a worldwide holiday, a formal declaration by the Queen accompanied by fireworks over the River Thames....all year long.
Now they did have that cool worldwide simultaneous broadcast of the anniversary special but for many that was too little too late.

So much has always been made about the Trekkies, like they're this force to be reckoned with. If fans aren't happy with what's being put out, why don't they get together and start doing something on their own, then? If more can be done to celebrate this franchise, then there's no reason not to. Studio involvement makes it a hell of a lot easier, but it's not absolutely required to host a celebration. Maybe it's time for Trekkies to show their stuff ...

As a model builder, I'm a bit disappointed that the current license holder, Polar Lights, apparently can't afford to do anything spectacular. They had a nice big detailed shuttlecraft all designed an ready, then bailed on it. The big model kit release for the 50th anniversary of TOS is a retooled re-release of the AMT Excelsior kit.

I saw a 50th anniversary magazine next to the registers when I stopped to pick up some groceries yesterday - at least I *think* so. It was named Star Trek and had the TOS crew on the cover. I considered picking it up, but needed to wait 'til payday (tomorrow) - so, honestly, I probably won't, because I won't bother making a special trip for it. It's unlikely to have anything I haven't already seen in it, and I'm not really a collector of stuff, so...

Syfy here in the UK has been making a fairly big deal of the 50th for the last couple of months. It's been showing double bills of TNG every weeknight, working through all the movies from TMP to NEM every Monday night and today has the usual TNG double bill, followed by TSFS and TVH (and TWOK last night), then an episode of VGR. In fact the whole schedule in general is very Trek-heavy: http://www.syfy.co.uk/schedule/day/today

I agree there's not been as much hubbub around it but as others have said, the franchise isn't in as good shape as it was in '91 or '96. I wish they'd have decided to make Discovery a little earlier though, so it would have been on air (online?) in time for the 50th. Hopefully Discovery will mark a revitalisation of the franchise though and we'll be in a better position for the diamond anniversary. :)

I remember for the 30th BBC 2 over here had a whole Star Trek night, with documentaries and a quiz, celebrity talking heads talking about how much they loved Trek, and the terrestrial premiere of Voyager. All hosted by Craig Charles of Red Dwarf fame. It was great, I recorded the whole thing on 2 VHS tapes. There was a souvenir edition of the Radio Times, which is our equivalent of TV Guide magazine, too. I may still have that somewhere.

Here's one of the documentaries they showed that night:
