the BIG blunder..

DS9's Badda Boom Badda Bing. The whole episode is 1) develop big plan and 2) watch as big plan goes wrong at every turn.

One of my favorite epsiodes.

Yes, totally agree!!! We just watched it a couple weeks back. DS9 was just so hip at that kind of story, something TNG and VOY and ENT never really got down, IMO.

Indiana Jones losing the Ark twice in ROTLA...3 if you count the ending, only his luck trumps Belloq's intelligence.

Terminator 2, let's go to Cyberdine and get rid of the tech and research...oops...cops come, Dyson dies...mission accomplished but not without cost.

STARSHIP TROOPERS, attack Klendathu...100,000 dead in one hour! There's a big blunder.

The Big Lebowski comes to mind. Pretty much nobody in that movie had a plan that worked.

a) The rug pissers - got the wrong man
b) The nihilists - failed extortion
c) Jackie Treehorn - slipped Lewbowski a mickie but then it turned out he didn't know anything anyway
d) Maude Lebowski - was trying to recover money that didn't exist
e) The Big Lebowski - his plan to get rid of his wife and steal from the charity backfired because his wife was never actually kidnapped
f) There was that detective that followed the Dude around, total waste of time
g) Donny
h) Donny's funeral
i) Anything Walter said

Heck I could go on and on

edit:
not really science fiction

Sounds just like some of the battles from WWI.

but still, its one of the best F-word drinking game flics out there!

Very true.

Take Dawn of the Dead '78. all that time spent blocking up and securing the mall, and it's all laid to waste by those damn bikers.

Just off the top of my head:

DOTD remake - One idiot locks the door and doesn't guard it when the others go to rescue the guy from the gun shop.

Day of the Dead - Let the one soldier deteriorate mentally to the point where he goes nuts and lets the horde in.

NotLD - The black guy and the dude in the basement spend more time arguing than planning.

2001: A Space Odyssey -- spend billions of dollars to send a state of the art spacecraft to Jupiter only to have the computer go psycho, kill most of the crew, and the last remaining crew member transcend into a superbeing who might not look too kindly on Homo Sapiens.

2010: The year We Make Contact -- spend billions of roubels to send a state of the art spacecraft to Jupiter only to lose one of the crew in an unnecessary accident, and narrowly excape from the planet blowing up by using an enemy country's very expensive spacecraft as a booster rocket.

Its just proof to me that CHINA will keep funding the American debt. Fine by me!

Can you think of a movie where the good guys make create a big plan, a lot of screen time is put towards it, and...poof..it ends up not working so great?

Well...except that the good guys are criminals, this describes well The Italian Job.

That wonderful last line of dialogue by Michael Caine as they teeter in their precarious position: "Hang on a minute lads, I've got a great idea!"

On BSG, colonizing New Caprica.

They find a planet that they hope the Cylons can't find. Cylons do find it eventually, enslave humanity, and kill around 5,000 people (even worse considering the total population is somewhere around 40,000 before).

Also the Cylon's Plan failed.

They tried to wipe out the human race, failed to kill the Fleet several times before changing the plan, which led to a civil war between the models and the loss of resurrection.

Then as we learned in The Plan, the real reason Cavil wanted to wipe out mankind was to prove a point to the Final Five. He failed to realize that by subjecting the humans to the very thing they had survived, he'd only endear them more to the Final Five.

It remains to be seen if Lee's Plan works out. By rejecting their technology, the human race has survived for several thousand years without repeating the cycle. If current humans start building killer robots, it will be a blunder.

Shawn of the Dead, the whole plan of going to the pub till it blew over. Pretty much every bit of it went wrong, except for Shawn and Liz getting back together.
