SyFy cancels Eureka

They've also back-paddled on producing a six-episode sixth season to wrap things up on the series: LINK. I'm not a fan, but I hope the fifth season will at least have some sort of resolution.

Damn it. I hope it at least gets a decent wrap-up.

what kind of wrap-up does it really need? People want to see Jack and Allison get married? Perhaps the same for Zane and Jo?
While satisfying to shippers, these plots aren't necessary.

The only thing I really want to see is Beverly Barlow in custody. If they make that happen at any time, the series is concluded satisfactorily for me.
Find out what the hell the Artifact really was.

Read it here.

I'm shocked and saddened. Eureka is one of my favorite shows.

What's even sadder, for me, at least, is that if Blood and Chrome doesn't strike my fancy, I will now have absolutely no reason to watch SyFy.

Wow - this was one of the only good shows SyFy had going for it. One less reason to bother with the channel any longer.

And Blood/Chrome is gonna flop big time. This channel is dunzo.

Even if B&C makes it to the air, folks around here are going to hate the vapid teen heartthrob guy they hilariously cast as Bill Adama! :rommie:

But SyFy is far from "dunzo," with the market that they're chasing with the types of shows they do now: they're going for the housewives and working moms who like relationship-heavy "lite" sci fi and space operas starring vapid teen heartthrobs. Plus there are always the wrestling fans. SyFy will do just fine without us.

Oh here's a great quote that illustrates just what I mean:

This is the only show on Skiffy my wife watches. I check it out, but it's too campy for my tastes.

And that's exactly how SyFy wants it. Your wife is their target market. You aren't.

Syfy are batshit crazy. It's one of their highest rated shows! A show as cheap as this has to be profitable while still pulling over 2 million viewers, what are they thinking? And for the record, I don't like nor even watch the show, I just think Syfy are mental...

Doesn't matter what the ratings are, it's always about the bottom line with these networks. Apparently, Sy-Fy deemed it financially prudent to cancel Eureka, regardless of how popular it may be.

Who cares? The Carter/Allison pairing has always seemed forced to me. Drives me nuts.

Some of us do. I'd like to see them finally get together, as it's been something they've been positioning since the start, sort of like a little story arc. It's that kind of thing you don't want to suddenly drop or switch directions as it would only end to a disappointing conclusion for some, otherwise you end up like Voyager ended with Chakotay & Seven as a couple out of the blue.

ICYMI, here's Amy Berg on Eureka's cancellation: "Everyone is asking why. It's simple, really. We are the network's golden child in every way, except profit margins. Fact is, Eureka is an expensive show to make. And we could not maintain the quality of our show with the cuts it would take to make us profitable for Syfy's new parent company. Our creative execs at Syfy fought hard to keep us. Trust me, they LOVE us. We just couldn't make the numbers work."
:wtf: Compared with shows like Stargate and Galactica, I don't see how this is an expensive show.

Also, from here, he says that they have to wrap up the *entire series* with the episode which begins filming Thursday. I assume that to mean that everything but the very last episode has already been filmed.

I guess the moral of the story here is that in this economy we're in right now, even cheap shows filmed in Canada are expensive to make. That's what I'm drawing from it.

Yeah, if anything it's got to be cheaper than Sanctuary, which uses a lot more CGI effects, and crazy makeup. How popular is Sanctuary?

So this means no wrap up of the story? SYFY do love to piss ppl off.

This is like AMC having problems keeping Breaking Bad on air. SyFy wants Eureka but they're in trouble financially because of the economy. They have Warehouse 13 and even better, the really cheap Alphas still pulling good ratings.

I liked Eureka better when they still had people actually trying to commit murder on a weekly basis, and less ongoing storyline of no interest, but it's still a charming show and I'll miss it.

Sanctuary was always had fewer episodes and they've already been cut. The ratings are decent enough by SyFy's basic cable standards but nowhere near Eureka's or Warehouse 13. (Or Alphas'?) My guess is the what Sanctuary has in the pipeline will be the last.

My guess is the actors are the most costly aspect. Every year that cost goes up, I'm sure.

Yearly raises are the norm for series regulars. Also the norm are five year contracts. Both factors probably contributed to the cancellation.

Crap. That's my favorite show on SyFy these days. The only other two SyFy shows that I watch are Sanctuary and (most recently) Alphas. I couldn't get into Warehouse 13.

The only thing I can think of is cast and crew salaries. Those are the main expense of a long running show, so I'm guessing those people have milked the show for all it's worth and ultimately milked themselves out of a job. Hell, even when SGU was renewed it was pulling lower numbers than Eureka is now, so their wage bill must be fucking huge, because the production qualities certainly don't point toward an expensive show.

CGI sets and effects are must cheaper than their practical counterparts, I doubt Sanctuary was more expensive. As for it's popularity its hard to tell, when it was moved into SGU's timeslot it did even worse than SGU did, one episode was as low as 750k viewers IIRC. It was usually aired with a wrestling lead-in though, and pulled about 1.4 million on average I believe.

SGU was pretty much guaranteed a two-season run at least, so the first season numbers probably shouldn't be used as a case for anything.

SGU had a 2 season commitment, that's the only reason it got the second season.

The problem with Eureka was probably the cast size. The more regulars they kept adding the more expensive the show got. Compare the number of characters on Eureka to Warehouse 13, Alphas, and Sanctuary and you'll see what the problem is.

SGU was never guaranteed a two-season run, it's a myth. What they did have in place however, was a deal that triggered an automatic renewal based on the show hitting certain ratings benchmarks. Craig Engler did suggest on Syfy's Twitter that the network had committed to two seasons off the bat, to which one of the producers called BS, and Craig later apologised and clarified their position.

last shot of Eureka:

henry Deacon powers up the repared Wormhole device that he repaired in an attempt to get back to their original timeline...

Cue Stargate activation in Cheyanne mountain... ;)
