Strange New Worlds review **POSSIBLE SPOILERS**

That just gives me flashbacks to the kind of tripe Enterprise was putting out, where Archer trying to get a cake for Malcolm was the A-plot and awesome sinister CG aliens were pushed to the B-plot.

It can be done right, but will it?
Wait, There was a B plot in that episode?

Well, if these reviews are any indication, yes it will be. But we'll find out for ourselves soon enough.

That episode you cite also isn't an example of what I was thinking of, or of what I understood the review to be mentioning -- incidental conversations not pertinent to the plot. That cake thing wasn't incidental to the plot, it was the plot. And yes, it was AWFUL. So misogynistic as well.

If they can hold my attention for an hour a week, for ten straight weeks, then they will have succeeded where everything else CBS has produced has failed, outside of Lower Decks.

the Malcolm cake thing wasn’t the A plot, they did give it maybe more time than they needed to though.

And I actually liked that episode, the aliens were sufficiently creepy and the plot line of them building and installing the phase cannons was pretty good.

I hope that this show makes use of the pre-TOS setting in a way Enterprise seasons 1-3 and Discovery seasons 1-2 never did. To me this setting was often used as little more than excuse to not have a 24th Century setting, even when the stories told could have taken place in a post-VOY series with a little retooling. I hope Strange New Worlds really embraces the idea of telling us how the world of Star Trek as we saw on TOS came to be. Hopefully in a way that goes beyond quick nostalgia hits. The good reviews coming in has me cautiously optimistic.

I am curious how this could work? They would have to ignore TNG forward, and not allow current Trek knowledge impact their view on the world.
That's a unique challenge.

I'm not sure what you mean. I'm not suggesting that SNW disregard Enterprise or Discovery, or anything about the 23rd century that was mentioned on TNG, DS9, or Voyager. I'm also not saying that the show should embrace everything about TOS that made it a product of its time, like the sexism. But as the show closest to the start of TOS, it would be nice for it to help establish the world that Kirk's 5-year mission would take place in. For example, the eventually Cold War with the Klingon Empire. That could be something to explore.

Uh....yeah? And?

srsly, when you're discussing TOS, why bother with a time period that doesn't even exist yet? ;)
I would rather not bother with TNG.

But, that knowledge already exists in popular culture. It takes very deliberate effort to ignore that knowledge.

Of course. But it's still necessary.

Like I said, if you're taking a look at the Trek universe as it exists during TOS' time, why would you bother about TNG? Those events won't happen for a hundred years.

If you're making a movie about any kind of historical era - real or fictional - you can't consider what came after it. Why would you? That'd be like saying you can't make movies like 42 because black players can play in major league baseball today.

Sighs.

Never mind.

But it's not, of course. It's a setting. Like the lagoon on Gilligan and the Brady house.

I disagree to me the ships are very much characters, but then again I have an emotional attachment to many inanimate objects. Which can be a failing if one considers how much money gets pored into project cars etc.

If you compare it to buildings, I would say the Enterprise is akin to Wright's Fallingwater. It is a landmark.
