Spoilers Strange New Worlds jumps the shark... ("Subspace Rhapsody")

Comparing art all the time is an exhausting venture.

I use to do it; I don't anymore. If something is entertaining that is my first priority.
Exactly. I'm glad I figured that out (to some extent*) early on. It's nice, because it means I can enjoy high quality TV and movies alongside cheesy B movie sci-fi too. I just have to change my expectations a bit.

*I still have some shows and things I don't like for irrational reasons!

It's interesting that you make these assumptions just because I have a different opinion than you. Have you been peeking at my Blu-ray and DVD collection?

I still think it's a good episode, standalone or not.
so we are on the same page. sort off.

it is a good episode but if we compare to Buffy that it inspired from, those that have seen the buffy episode including me find it generic to that.

Example: The Buffy musical was ranked In 2009 by TV Guide as 14th on its list of "TV's Top 100 Episodes of All Time.

Is this the same tv guide that said SNW was ruined because of spock's romance crappy drama and we even had one of the lowest moments of his many crappy romances in subspace-rhapsody

It was good, but it could have been better. Trouble is musical episodes tend to be compared with Once More With Feeling, which was so far ahead of the rest that nothing can compare. The only musical episode that's come close to Buffy in my view was Once Upon a Time.

SNW in its second half has started to suffer from too many "special" episodes. One or two a season when there's 20 other ones is fine.

Season 1 had one special episode (the time-travel one at the end)
Season 2 had two (The Musical and The Crossover)

Season 3 had 4 or 5 "special episodes".

At this rate we've only got 4 more "normal" SNW episodes left before it finishes.

Which is why I don't. I haven't seen Buffy and don't care to.

But, what I have seen and learned over the years is that art must stand or fall by its own merits, not what other art has done.

What's the prize for that?
The prize is after 3 years, we get to honestly critique SNW equally as we have done with all the star treks sometimes to the impossible standard of the post 2005 era.

Don't worry, SNW is not a flawless masterpiece, that some have made it out to be this last 3 years, we have even had better trek post 2000s and that is fine.:)

Perhaps the musical got a little on the nose and I do not feel it is ageing well. the lukewarm reception of season 3 for been too goofy has made people look at subspace-rhapsody more harshly in 2025.

Musicals can be bad in general but when you now try to match one of the best and fall short, fairly that gets talked about. Wonder if TNG could have pulled off a musical with Patrick Stewart coming from a theatre background, nah....I doubt it. I just do not see it.

We got close
Yeah we did and if I remember , My Boy Riker can play the trumpet :)

Sometimes it is best when less is more. Music was always in star trek. TOS Charlie X, Uhura singing to Spock should be as good as we get from a TOS setting musical.

when you over do it.... you get Subspace Rhapsody.

I confess, I loved love love Riker. he is my one of favorite trek characters of all time. LMAO;)

Why start now? In my experience, TNG fans told me it was a flawless masterpiece and how dare I like TOS?

This is not new to Star Trek. It's quite old. There's no honest critique here because the standard is continuously used is to reference back to the old. It's tiresome.
