Spoilers Strange New Worlds jumps the shark... ("Subspace Rhapsody")

Have you considered the possibility that... I don't like this one episode? I like fun Trek, but this was pushing it.

No, that never occurred to me.

Thank you for pointing it out.

And nothing says "we hate fun" more than not enjoying one singular episode that is being talked about in a thread, despite not mentioning dislike of other fun episodes in the franchise.

Good. I'm glad we agree.

;)

Which is fine, but entertainment is highly subjective. There's no objective standard to say what is or is not good Trek. It's wonderfully variable. People love TNG but I cannot stand it. I enjoy TOS more than any other Trek, but it has several episodes I don't enjoy.

Subspace Rhapsody is not my favorite episode by a long shot but I wouldn't begrudge anyone who likes it. My tastes just are different.

Exactly.

And certain people just don't seem to get that. Because apparently the only fun episodes that exist are ones they consider fun.

Pretty damn arrogant, honestly.

Of course we have. That was the point of your thread topic. And since you continue to bring up your dislike with every post since the OP, I think this horse has been sufficiently beaten.

It honestly does a fantastic job of being pure fun whilst also giving viewers something to chew on social commentary-wise.
yes the social commentary aspect is what I liked about star trek. in fact it is what always made me finally shift to prefring star trek over star wars generally.

I love how star trek can be intellectual and have wisdom but also have their character feel like adults or like my parents handling and talking serious issues.

SNW has sort of not really done well on all of this even from season 1. I would even say even the kelvinverse faired better because it did have some strong anchors like Bruce Greenwood Pike and Quinto Spock.
What's so wrong with Sulu becoming a mad swashbuckling hero under the influence?

I liked it and I love the reference or call back in star trek 2009 when Kelvin Sulu did fencing.

but when you have watched too many shows and have a lot to compare with, you begin to see what is a lacking.
It's interesting that you make these assumptions just because I have a different opinion than you. Have you been peeking at my Blu-ray and DVD collection?

I still think it's a good episode, standalone or not.

I didn’t like the Rhapsody episode. I also wasn’t a fan of the one where they dressed up as knights in that fairytale-style episode. I absolutely cannot stand “Four and a Half Vulcans,” and I hated the holodeck episode too. And let’s be real—I’m pretty sure I’m going to… ahem… strongly dislike the upcoming “special episode” in season 4 (trying to keep it spoiler-free, but if you know, you know).

That said, I can hate it for myself. But I’m genuinely happy these episodes bring joy to others. I love that Star Trek is a franchise with something for everyone. If it were just up to me, I’d ask them to dial these types of episodes way down. But hey—it’s a new era, a new generation. And to quote a wonderful woman from Nashville by way of Missouri, whom I’ve mentioned here before: “If it makes you happy, it can’t be that bad.”

Comparing art all the time is an exhausting venture.

I use to do it; I don't anymore. If something is entertaining that is my first priority.
