Spoilers Strange New Worlds General Discussion Thread

Oh, ST III is entirely bullshit.

Fun movie, but none of it makes a lick of sense.

Sort of a precursor to the Abrams films, I suppose.
It's not bullshit, but it does take the sting right out of Spock's death in WoK. Even Wrath's director thought this.

But like I said in my previous post: we're often just throwing around opinions here.

It's complete bullshit. Ignoring for the moment the illogic of the deus ex machina that Bennett pulled out of his ass to resurrect Spock, the story proceeds entirely by means of idiot plotting - everyone other than the Enterprise crews and the Vulcans continually ignore what's in front of their faces and make the dumbest decisions they can to keep the ball rolling.

I was entertained. Great score, too. In the end, it's all that matters to me. Life is too short to get bent out of shape over fiction. I just don't rewatch certain things, or wait a while and maybe a second viewing will change my mind? Or I stop midway. There's plenty of stuff out there in the place of mediocrity.

Well, can't be discerning all the time.
It's about suspension of disbelief. Some can do it, some can't. Because, you may have forgotten, but this is all just fiction we're talking about. You said Star Trek III was 'fun', so you were entertained even though you thought some of the plot was foolish. But again, it's not supposed to be taken seriously.

edit: Sure, you want the writers, directors, actors, etc to take what they do seriously. But the final hopeful goal should be entertainment.

Scotty: So Dr. M'Benga, what exactly does happen if someone uses too much Protocol 12? You mentioned negative health effects?

M'Benga: And severe personality changes that are difficult to reverse. For example strong, independent people can become meek and submissive after using too much of it. Come to think of it, I noticed Christine Chapel taking way too much of it recently, I hope she doesn't suffer any of these symptoms in the future...

There's a lot of things you can call Nurse Chapel from TOS; but "Meek and Submissive" aren't two of them. In TOS, no she never openly fought, but she was also neither meek in her interactions nor submissive.

On the topic of canonicity, it occurred to me that TAS Counter-Clock Incident has continuity issues introduced by SNW that go far beyond Robert April's ethnicity and wouldn't be fixed even if TAS reissued the episode with the character redrawn to look like Adrian Holmes. The episode opens with Kirk stating that April had been ambassador-at-large for the past 20 years. SNW is roughly 10 years before TAS and April seems to be very much Starfleet military and not a diplomat ambassador-at-large. April's also a commodore in TAS while he's a fleet admiral in SNW. I believe a commodore is lower than a fleet admiral? So is a demotion in April's future...?

Don't forget the Alien ship that can travel at Warp 36! :)
