Firearms have been around in some form since the 10th century.

When are we developing a better weapon to replace the firearm after 1100 years?
You aren't, you're going to improve what already exists.

StarFleet was considering using the TR-116 rifle.

The Teleporting Bullet Rifle with Exo-Thermic (See Through Walls) Targeting System would've been a Ultimate Support Sniper Weapon.

Combine that with Anti-Matter Bullets.

One Bullet could had the effect of a 2000 Lb JDAM with the right mixture of Anti-Matter.

Just imagine not being able to defend a surprise 2K lb JDAM esque Bullet out of no-where.

You can level any Borg Target or anybody hiding within buildings or underground.

It only takes a little bit of technical ingenuity to use what is available.

On the one hand, yes. And, on the other hand, to borrow a page from Robert Heinlein's STARSHIP TROOPERS:
Andthat is the beauty of a powered suit: you don’t have to think about it. You don’t have to drive it, flyit, conn it, operate it; you just wear it and it takes its orders directly from your muscles and does for youGenerated by ABC Amber LIT Convertera http://www.processtext.com/abclit.htmlwhat your muscles are trying to do. This leaves you with your whole mind free to handle your weaponsand notice what is going on around you... which issupremely important to an infantryman who wants todie in bed. If you load a mud foot down with a lot of gadgets that he has to watch, somebody a lot moresimply equipped — say with a stone ax — will sneak up and bash his head in while he is trying to read avernier.

Modern rifes and bullets are way more advanced than muskets or musket balls, and we have 'guns' that can fire projectiles electromagnetically.
I agree but the principles are the same. We have not "moved beyond" firearms.; we have improved upon them.

Likewise, I don't expect them to "move beyond" phasers; I expect them to improve them. The 32nd century are some of my favorites, outside of TOS and SNW. 24th century to 26th century was super annoying.

At the Small Arms level, it's a Novelty / Toy.

Nobody takes it seriously as a main stay Projectile Launcher you would use to defend yourself.

It's literally in Early Working ProtoType stage, but has no practical commercial applications yet.

We have .22 LR Rifles & Pistols that could probably do more damage than these "EM Accelerating Projectile Launchers".

It's far from being useful / ready as a practical weapon compared to a real FireArm that operates on far simpler principles & mechanics.

Real FireArms, even crappy .22 LR caliber based Rifles / Pistols beats it on every useful metric.

Lethality, Muzzle Energy, Costs, Operational Logistics, Size & Weight, Reliability.

Every useful metric you can use to measure a FireArm, it beats current "EM Accelerating Projectile Launchers" to date.

The only thing it doesn't win out on is the Noise it makes when you fire the Projectile, which is accepted for what it is.

As for Large Arms that you would mount on WarShips, those are a failure due to the Plasma generated by the Rail Gun eroding the Barrels at a excessive rate.

You can't fire off many shots before you need to replace the barrel, which itself isn't good for longevity, it's too costly to make working with current material science.

The operational costs to run a IRL Rail Gun isn't worth it at the moment.

People are going to complain regardless. If we did get twenty plus episode seasons, someone would whine about "this is too much episodes to keep up with. Why can't this show just do eight episodes a season like [Insert Popular Streaming Show]?"
For me, the right number of shows is exactly what they give us.

Considering my favorite IP has been going for almost 60 years now, I feel extremely lucky.
