Spoilers Strange New Worlds General Discussion Thread

Star Fleet did give her command of the USS ARCHER, so technically they already allowed her to to be a Captain.
I'm not sure that counts anymore than saying Dax or Dr. Bashir got to be a Captain just because they were ranking officer on a runabout mission.

The USS Archer is supposedly a Scout Class Starship.
One would surmise that it's a little better than a Runabout for it's time period.
Plus, Runabouts were never really meant to be anything more than long-range Diplomatic Shuttles, not warships, even though they were pressed into service as such during the Dominion War.
(mostly as a distraction)

Runabouts & Federation Fighters were 'suicide craft' against the Dominion.
One would surmise that most of their pilots assumed they wouldn't be getting back to a Starbase going against one Dominion ship, nevermind a flotilla.

And after that relationship ends, Kirk hooks up with Carl Spock.
No your getting things mixed up. Carl Spock got married to James R Kirk in another universe. Aboard the Enterprise. Captain Bruce Greenwood Pike performed the ceremony. In this universe their will someday be a Worf who has a birthday party but Picard can't attend because he was needed on the bridge.

Somewhat off topic, but this just reminded me of something I like about SNW, its depiction of starships of various sizes and abilities.

We have tiny little mission specific scout ships like the Archer type.

We've got mid sized ships like the Kelcie Mae, probably used for routine duties throughout the Federation.

Larger ships like the Farragut, highly capable, but likely limited in their range.

And finally, we have ships like the Constitution Class. They feel like grand Ships of the Line. Ships meant to boldly go out into the great unknown and face down any challenge. It makes the Enterprise actually feel special.

I always loved the shot from the opening of season 2. Seeing Enterprise next to the little Archer and showing the stark difference between the two types of ship.

It only had three people aboard, and I'm guessing all three were just a temporary assignment. Runabouts don't typically operate with more than three. And given runabouts have their own registry numbers and USS prefix in their names, they basically are scout ships.

So basically, an oversized warp-shuttle.
Again, probably only meant for Diplomatic missions, not covert or First Contact missions.

One could surmise that the single, much larger warp nacelle on the Archer, was probably meant to achieve WARP 4 or 5 for going much greater distances (with a lot more excess power for ancillary functions), whereas the smaller nacelles on the "runabout" probably only achieved Warp 2 or 3 and was very limited in its other capabilities at that time.

The Archer is barely the size of the Defiant from DS9 and probably even smaller. The Franklin of circa 2147-64 is probably bigger than the Archer and it has two nacelles.
