Spoilers Strange New Worlds General Discussion Thread

This is a non-issue. Not every character with face time needs development. Leslie on TOS got no development at all and Kyle barely more than that and both remain enjoyable parts of that series. We even got Commander Kyle in TWOK and got to see him with a van dyke or goatee. Do we need the backstory of how he got promoted and why he grew that facial hair?

Nope. Not a main character.

Garak and Nog on DS9 became fan favorite characters because the writers liked what Andrew Robinson and Aron Eisenberg did with their early appearances and wrote more and meatier script material for both. They were intended as a glorified one-off or an occasional supporting character but with deft writing and the fun, tongue-in-cheek performances by those actors the writers ran hog wild with both.

IMHO the biggest miss - by far - for VOY was not taking advantage of the crew being stranded in the Delta Quadrant to build up a consistent set of secondary characters who were also on the ship.

Yeah, they did this a little early on, but after the disappointing response to the semi-serialization of Season 2, they basically abandoned the idea. By the back half of the show, it was just Naomi Wildman and Icheb, more or less.

VOY needed its own Garak and Nog. Sadly Icheb and Naomi Wildman were not those characters. Which is a shame and reflection on the writers because Scarlett Pomers gave a fun and watchable performance as Naomi and it was kinda cool to have a kid on the ship who wasn't an ex-Borg.

And yet there are lots of other shows with minor characters that get character development just fine. But sure, let’s be apologists because ‘that’s Star Trek.’
Well, it is Star Trek. Even when the bridge officers are in the main cast, they're still not guaranteed any character development, Harry Kim and Travis Mayweather prove this. So to expect character development from bridge officers who are listed in the end credits as Co-Stars is genuinely perplexing.

Besides, the whole "why don't we get to know Detmer, Owo, Rhys or Bryce" routine is like expecting story material on Stargate centering around Walter Harriman or Sgt. Siler. The show isn't about those characters.

Frankly, the fact we've gotten so much screen time for Detmer and Owo is shocking and I'm happy with what we know. What we know informs the characters in episodes when they're necessary to the narrative. Outside those scattered episodes I'm fine with them being Chekov or Sulu only with marginally more dialogue.

Usually such arguments center on dissatisfaction with the main characters.

Being that they'll be filming throughout Canadian winter, I wonder if they'll take advantage of the weather and film something outside in real snow. Fake snow almost always looks exactly that, fake.

I know the season was written before the strike, but I wonder if any location shoots planned for the first half of the season would be amended to take advantage of the situation? A warm summer forest becomes a winter wonderland.

Time to visit Andoria and Hemmer's family.

I'm sure they could find some strange bit of architecture in the GTA that they could film in the dead of winter and call Andorian.
