Spoilers Strange New Worlds General Discussion Thread

Because of how Paramount sold the thing. I bought the first four movies as part of the 2021 4K box, assuming that they would then sell me another chunk of movies in another subsequent box. But no, the next year they then sold 1-6 as a box. Then the DE of TMP came out. If I wanted the set with all of the goodies (including the television edit, which from 1982ish to 2001 WAS Star Trek: The Motion Picture) then that came with the Theatrical Cut again. But no Blu rays, because that would be silly, right?
OK, you're right, they suck!

I need to get the discs of SNW. Of course I still need to get ST 5 and 6 in 4K. But I have The Motion Picture... 4 times! (Theatrical twice, DE, and Special Longer Version! You suck, Paramount Home Video Division.)
I still have my TMP Theatrical version on LaserDisc but unfortunately, I no longer have a way to play it.

Well...on EBay:

;)
(Hey, I have STVI:TUC and ST:FC on Lasedisc as well. Had a Pioneer LaserDisc player that would probably still work today if I bothered to hook it back up - but I also have both on DVD and no, not upping to the Blu-Rays as I have other ways to watch both as well now.)

I forget what I've got on Laserdisc - maybe a Trek movie, pretty sure I've got the mid-1980s B&W/Color release of "The Cage." I know I've got Forbidden Planet and Planet of The Apes. They're all in a heavy box in the closet with my player. Panasonic?

The TMP LaserDisc is the only one I still have, so I'm not going to be buying a player just for it.

It's more of a collectable at this point for me.

My best friend who was always an early adapter (first guy I knew with a VHS player and a home computer) did Laser discs. He's currently trying to sell them on e-bay.

I did have a working LD player until a CD that was part of an expensive box set got stuck in the player and I had to destroy the player to get the CD out. I have a lot of LDs still (including the TMP special longer version disc); most of them are music-related (for instance, a box set of The Beatles' Anthology on LD).

A previous boyfriend had a laser disc player. I remember the picture was much better than VHS.
Yep - never suffered from magnetic degradation. I remember finding them a little fuzzy, though, instead of smooth gradient fills in backgrounds, there seemed to be what we used to call "dithering" back in the 8-bit world, probably because there wasn't the tech available at that time to do full 17-million color palettes.

I tell ya the tech that mystified me were the Capacitance Electronic Discs, back in the early-80's. These things were pure analogue - they had grooves like a freakin' record! How they were able to encode audio AND video information using ancient groove-and-stylus tech was nothing short of black magic!

But, they did occasionally suffer Laser Rot that rendered parts of, or the entire Disc unplayable. (I only had about 5 and never saw it, but a friend who had a HUGE Japanese Anime Laser Disc collection had a couple of his go 'bad' because of it.)

Well at least it looks like SNW WON'T be part of the 'Cancellation Fever' a few Streamers are experiencing during the Hollywood union strikes:

...Right now, there is no clear end in sight when it comes to the strikes. Last week, the WGA and the AMPTP returned to the negotiating table, but yesterday Variety reported negotiations are now in “limbo.” There are no current negotiations happening with SAG-AFTRA, but on Sunday the union said it was “ready at a moment’s notice” to return to the table. For his part, Fisher said he had no idea what was going on with the strikes, but his team has been continually planning ahead for how they could start production once the strikes end. He explained…

I've had a couple of discs deteriorate from rot, sure, but they were always old CD's and MP3 discs that were sitting out in my car, exposed to extreme hot/cold temperatures during the day while at work over the years.

However, I've found that even my oldest DVD's on my shelf (like the first Matrix movie, for example), in a more climate-controlled environment, still load and play without any issues. My old Rush and Pink Floyd CD's from the 80's also still function flawlessly, even with a few surface scratches. At the end of the day, it's all about how well-treated something is.

It should also be noted that writable discs don't last nearly as long as commercially-made discs. Different tech involved entirely - laser-activated ink vs physical embossing.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that you're right. Between their readiness to start at a moment's notice, and their good neilson streaming ratings, the show really deserves to come back for more seasons.

Well... that and y'know, the fact that the show's pretty awesome - that's a good reason too. :D

Guess that makes sense, they don't need the writers and actors to start making the sets and props.
Scripts change all the time. In a collaborative effort, you don't want to start work on something until the decisions are fully locked down. Who knows what changes will be to Scripys once the strikes are over?

Episode 1 was set to film a week or two after the writers strike started, so I'd imagine the first episode or 2 would have been locked down already, and some stuff being built.
