IIRC, they always referred to him as recurring in interviews
Scotty was in many cast photos in TOS but was never considered a main cast member nor listed in anything other than the closing credits of episodes.

Why would you not count the animated stuff?
I think they should be counted separately. So 800 episodes, 72 animated episodes, 10 mini episodes (shorts), 13 Theatrical movies. Take that Star Wars & Stargate.

I include TAS, LD, PRO and the Short Treks but, hey, to each their own. 800 live-action, full-length episodes in any small screen franchise is a colossal achievement and has been matched or surpassed just a couple of times.

I think that focusing on Burnham wasn’t necessarily a mistake; rather, it was her characterization. It was inconsistent and there were times when she was hard to identify with/root for/be interested in as the protagonist. Then they turned her and everyone else into (bad) therapists. I think if the characterization was better/more consistent it wouldn’t be so polarizing.
