Spoilers Strange New Worlds General Discussion Thread

Personally I’m also of the opinion that the series needed m/needs an original theme song instead of using cues from TOS. Like I get why and I like it, but it irks me in that it doesn’t get it.

I do like the re-arranged TOS theme in SNW very much. Using bossanova for TOS was a very 1960s aesthetic decision and does not really hold up for me, so the update is a good one, IMO.

Fun fact, one was composed and recorded for it but abandoned very late in the production before the pilot aired:

The B section of this theme (:58 in the video) appears in a lot of the incidental music in S1 episodes for a lot of the season. Also, the change to the TMP theme was made so late that you can hear the first big chord of this unused theme (:41 in the video) in the saucer separation sequence in Encounter At Farpoint before they go into the TMP/TNG theme. It sounds weird because it's not in the same key. I'm not sure why it was done this way but I'm sure there was a technical reason for it.

Yeah, the alternate theme was included on the TNG soundtrack back in 1988, I believe. Dennis McCarthy wrote it, if I'm not mistaken.

And, of course, the producers decided they liked the Goldsmith theme better. They could certainly have saved themselves a lot of money by using McCarthy's, which seems to be the real driver behind a lot of those decisions being made for streaming Trek. Sometimes that works out really well - artists get a shot - though most often it works out just well enough.

It sounds... wrong. Too militaristic or too Buck Rogers or too... something.

It's plenty original in it's arrangement. More original than what they did for TNG back in the day - which was just to wholesale appropriate the theme done for ST:TMP.

(Go and listen to the opening theme for TOS. It's not all that similar to the actual theme for Strange New Worlds except for some musical phrases that have been a part of nearly every live action Star Trek franchise TV series or feature film to date.)

Haha, it does seem off. It isn't *bad* but the Goldsmith TMP theme is better and works better (even though they had to shorten it to fit into the TNG opening credits). I think if they used this one we'd so used to it by now that we wouldn't think this. I do like the B section of it. Whenever it shows up in S1 episodes I do enjoy it. They always used it well.

If Id been making Lower Decks I would have been sorely tempted to use the rejected TNG theme. Like the crew of the California class, it's not good enough for the Enterprise.

Honestly this would be a PHENOMENAL gag and I hope they do it.

Screeners of the first six episodes of season 2 have gone out. Review embargo apparently lifts next Thursday Monday.

Your post was incoherent. As in, it was just a random list of things that have nothing to do with one another spewed out with no context whatsoever, making no attempt at all to actually connect anything you said to what people above that post were talking about, nor to in any way clarify why you have a problem with any of the things you listed, and not even doing a very good job of actually making it clear what specific things you were even trying to list in the first place (which is why people had to actually ask what the hell you were talking about).

And that is also why it comes across like random whining instead of reasonable criticism. My definition of whining is not at all based on just being negative. Everyone's negative sometimes, and for good reason in many cases. The point is how you go about it.
what makes you think the main characters have nothing to do with each other?
the context is that s2 in coming out soon (posting my hopes and wishes) and s1 is on yt now for free with a lot of people rewatching, including me (remembering what I didn't like).
why would you expect posts to have connections to preceding posts unless they are quoted?

I never said the main characters have nothing to do with each other. The things that you wrote about them don't seem to have anything to do with one another.

And I don't automatically expect posts to connect to preceding posts. I expect posts to *either* connect to preceding posts and continue an existing conversation *or* make an actually genuine attempt to start a conversation by introducing a new topic which by definition has to include a clear understanding of what the hell you want to talk about (which your post didn't) and which really also should give some indication of why you wanted to talk about it and/or why you feel the way you do about it (which your post didn't).
