I hate to say this but what if Boyce died in between the DIS Season 2 finale and the SNW pilot and that's the reason why Pike is seen off looking all shaggy looking like we see in the trailer?

Also next to the Obi-Wan Kenobi show, this is number two on my most anticipated show to watch.

Frankly, if the death of someone close to him is that traumatic for Pike after all these years, I'm not sure they want him commanding a ship. Boyce was not a young man when last we saw him.

I think if I had one criticism of the show so far is how it insists on digging so deep into the lore and intertwining it all. So far, it's a real classic example of small universe syndrome.

The money of Trek is tied to nostalgia. They are going to hit it hard and fast for as long as it lasts.

Boyce gave off the feeling that he was Pike's intimate on the ship at that point in his command. Such a close friend and confidante dying or being killed in the line of duty may have been pretty traumatic. Kirk feeling guilty had Spock died during TOS might have resulted in extended shore leave for the Captain.

Yup. People want Trek to feel like Trek? That means doubling down on what is making money. Nostalgia is making money and what the loudest segment of fans is claiming they want

If there is one thing Discovery did right, it was revamp the phaser and communicator.

It was an almost perfect blend of the hand laser from "The Cage(TOS)" and the regular series Type 2 phaser.
