Spoilers Strange New Worlds General Discussion Thread

Now.......how to reconcile him never meeting Chris Pike, AND it appears he's already a captain.......
Mendez: You ever met Chris Pike?
Kirk: When he was promoted to Fleet Captain.

I suppose they could pull a Star Wars Clone Wars and have Pike and Kirk always just missing each other the way Anakin and Grievous did...

He's 39 playing 26. He doesn't look young and vibrant like Chris Pine (who last time he did Trek was 36 playing 27) but I guess we'll see.

I just went back and watched that scene........I guess there's a little wiggle room.....I also went to Memory Alpha and I guess although it's never been mentioned, Kirk COULD have had another command BEFORE the Enterprise.......

Paul Wesley will be playing Kirk.

I have to say, I like the tunic collars more the more I see them. I like that they have the little stand-up detail instead of just looking like a V-neck t-shirt, like I originally thought. But those shoulder pads are too much. Wish they didn’t insist on sticking them into everything these days.

Oh fuck this! I had so much hope that they wouldn't go immediately to Kirk, but apparently they WANT to make this more like the Kelvinverse than the supposed Prime Universe they kept saying they'd honor. Great! Its KIRK! Wonderful...but CAPTAIN Kirk?! This better be some kind of time travel episode or something, because as far as I know he'd be a commander at MOST by 2259...but I guess we'll just forego that, right?!

The shoulder pads and the little department insignia sewn into the accents should go.

I’m not nuts about the insignia detail but can live with that. The shoulder pads should go, the black undershirts need taller collars, and the rank braids need moved up the sleeves and should all be gold. Then I’d be content.

In an ideal world, the trousers should have flared bottoms, but I guess that’s too much to ask. Right now, the effect is a little too early 21st-century skinny jeans.

Kirk: Captain Pike, I'm James T. Kirk, the youngest commander in Starfleet. The fleet currently uses way too much energy, resources and, oh right we don't use money, other assets. I'm here to oversee a years long refit to a much less costly, resource wise, Enterprise and eventually the entire fleet. Your elimination of holograms was only the beginning. Starfleet has decided to present a more humble and working class appearance when dealing with strange new worlds considering we're already being accused of elitism.

Pike: You ****-ing kid, get the ***** off my bridge, you young ****!!!!!

(Kirk's working experience with Pike was so tense and bitter that years later Kirk denied ever knowing the man other than acknowleding meeting him upon Kirk taking command of the Enterprise)

He never said that was the only time they met. The next sentence could be "and after we met we served together for a year, haven't you ever read my service record?"

I don't mind the actor being much older than the character. It makes it less likely that he'll be leading his own TOS retcon series in 5 years!

I think this might mean Mount and Romijn for way less time than we think, and they are only sticking around for one or two seasons. Then we get a time jump to Kirk taking command before the end of season 2.
