The Enterprise should always be a ship with some history on it. The hard thing for them is making the past feel archaic.

Star Trek: Enterprise had trouble with that. "The Menagerie" worked so powerfully because the past really was the past, even if recent, and felt like it.

Some of that is the camera angle so it's probably smaller than it looks here, but yeah, it's bigger than the TOS transporter pad no matter what the actual size.

An actress (and stunt double) for 'Young La'an' is listed, so it seems like we'll be getting flashbacks of her.

Some of that is the camera angle

Yeah, it appears to be a wide lense.
