Spoilers Strange New Worlds General Discussion Thread

Lazy? it would allow them to be more creative. That isn't lazy at all.

Nonsense. It's what, 2258 when SNW starts? Kirk takes command in 2265. There are many, many years of stories to tell before Pike meets his fate. Creativity can flow. The show won't be on the air that long, anyway, and even if it is, it doesn't have to match the real-world time passage.

Plus Star Trek isn't that kill happy with the casts anyway so its not like they would be anymore plot armored then usual just becuase its a prequel.

The notion that fitting stories into restrictive existing continuity presents some stimulating creative challenge that should be admired above rethinking stories and concepts or - horrors! - inventing new stuff is arrant nonsense. It's like insisting that working jigsaw puzzles is a kind of high art.

But, folks want mom's macaroni and cheese.

No, it is abundtly clear that fans want comfort food. Star Trek has become about safe and familiar rather than new frontiers. A reboot is a more creative way to actually explore new frontiers rather than constantly facing the Star Trek box that inevitably is pounded on to whatever new show comes about.

Strange New Worlds has a lot of potential to be very interesting, but it will probably be forced in to the mold rather than being a sandbox of creativity.

Tv is becoming that way it seems.TBH I rarely watch television anymore ,I find that what I do see has become formulaic and pat (even the vaunted “prestige”shows).

I don't see it as fundamentally any different than say constructing a period historical drama. Obviously there are limitations that the setting confers, but it doesn't mean the story can't be compelling regardless.

Being a reboot or not is exactly the same as being written by a fan or not. They're all completely meaningless as 'predictors' of quality or originality/creativity. The only thing that actually makes a difference is creative talent and the priorities set by producers and executives.

What they’re doing with Discovery says otherwise.

And Prodigy seems pretty left field.
They all have potential to be less than safe. But Discovery is leaving aside some elements and moving towards that Trek mold. Time will tell.

Prodigy will be interesting.
