Spoilers Strange New Worlds General Discussion Thread

What service could Boyce or Piper possibly provide besides "oh, hey, they're from the original pilots."?
We would get to see what Boyce did once he stopped being the CMO and also just a excuse as well to explore his friendship with Pike. Piper is a blank slate of the character. You can basically do anything with him since we know nothing about him.

Only if the story absolutely demanded they be in it, like if their inclusions was important for M'Benga's development. Perhaps if Boyce had to testify at a trial because M'Benga killed that Klingon.

If and unfortunately it's a bigger if than I would prefer Strange New Worlds does get to the point where it catches up with TOS then you can explain your other doctor, but you can do that in a throwaway line of dialogue. But you also need Uhura to have transferred to the command division by then and Sulu has to be a science division officer when he joins the Enterprise. I would argue those two are slightly more important details but them getting retconned would do no harm.

We can do both. A 50-minute TV episode is plenty long enough to have a callback cameo as well as explore a new character's story development. The movie First Contact is a prime example. We get the return of Zefram Cochrane but we also dive headfirst into the long-simmering character arcs of Picard and Data. TWOK brings back Khan but gives us things about Kirk we both never knew and didn't expect. Trek can do both and often does, but if we never again see Philip Boyce or Yeoman Colt I'm not going to lose any sleep.

I wouldn't be surprised if the writers did touch on Trek's Other' CMO's at some point.

Those were pretty much underdeveloped characters and seem way too tasty for typical Trek writers to pass up.

While I'm not clamoring for them to do so, I wouldn't mind if they did.

A little fan service never hurt anybody, though too much can be annoying.

(just like with sex ... )

Good for them.

Maybe they can keep growing that backstory and character rather than continuing to add in more characters.

Why not do both? Shows can both use older characters and new characters if they want and some old characters arr such a blank page they might as well be seen as a new character because whatever depth you give to them will be new since we know next to nothing about them.

Because I'd rather learn more about M'Benga.

What if Piper is selected by M'Benga to be his replacement because they use to serve together on another ship and became good friends. They don't like each other now because Piper had a affair with the women who was the mom of his daughter but despite that he still respects him as a Doctor which is why he tells Pike he should be his replacement as CMO.

What if Piper is actually Garth of Izar's former CMO and Kirk requested him because of his experience?
