Spoilers Strange New Worlds General Discussion Thread

Well, no.

Different shows, different approaches. At least with SNW I don't feel like I need a guide book.

To be fair, DS9 was on a station, not a ship. So the show expanded into the station. Still, I do not think it went that much deeper than TNG, which was following the Kirk-Spock-McCoy model at it's onset.

TNG: Picard, Data, Riker; Worf, LaForge, Crusher/Pulaski, Troi, Wesley, Guinan. Not counting Tasha, that is 9. Plus the recurring characters: Q, O'Brien, Keiko, Barclay, Luwaxanna, Ro, Alexander. It gets to 15 pretty quick.

DS9? Sisko, Kira, Odo, Dax, O'Brien, Bashir, Quark & Worf, + Garrick. That's 9 I would call the heart of the show. Add in Keiko, Jake, Nog, Rom, and such and you are in the low teens. It does get boosted when you add in more Bajorans & Cardassians, & Doninion characters. But there where persistent antagonists on DS9, rather than a new one every week

Lack of character development is a symptom of doing less than half the number of episodes the “classic” Trek series did. But back then characters on TOS, TNG, VOY and ENT got the left behind.

And even DS9 which was far and away the best Trek series at developing characters left someone like Jadzia a little underdeveloped.

I guess after 18 or 20 seasons, these SNW characters will have been better developed.

Even Ziyal on DS9 didn't get much development other than "Dukat's half-Bajoran daughter who doesn't like what her dad did or still does and wants to be around more Bajorans to explore her heritage." She was one of the only characters on DS9 who felt incomplete and half-assed.

Don’t forget that she loved Garak and he loved her.

But even she had enough character development than when she was murdered it was a bummer. Far, far, far more than the death of a certain character on Disco S2 that has been debated recently in the Controversial Takes thread.

Oh, I remembered. It seemed to do more for Garak's character than it did hers. But I'll give the writers credit for trying something daring with her character.

That aspect did go by the wayside once the war started. I suspect if she had fled with him to join the AQ powers it would have been expanded upon.

All the TOS characters except Kirk and Spock were essentially ciphers (And I include Mc Coy in that too).We know more about all the SNW crew than ever we did about their earlier/later counterparts.

I gotta tell you I have mixed emotions about the finale. I'm looking forward but after Thusday, Star Trek Strange New Worlds is on hiatus indefinitely until this strike gets resolved.

Kinda the same view/position.
I hope it doesn't end on a cliffhanger and story arcs are either resolved or at a point where they can be picked up later on, without having closures or certain milestones now.

However the strike is in my view absolutely necessary in order for the writers and acting talent (and probably more professions) to be a longer term viable career path going forward (health protections, insurances, salary, participation in succsess etc.)

I have the Canadian Prime so I'm able to access the SNW Paramount+ main details screen. Unfortunately it doesn't list Audio description in the language options. ( but it does for
Amazon shows like Bosch and its indeed available as listed)

So this has me concerned it's not available on the Canadian Prime p+ channel/Paramount plus app . I guess I will need to wait for a Canadian Paramount plus poster to confirm or pay for a month and find out myself.

No excuse for it NOT being available on Paramount plus Canada because Paramount *has* the audio description asset and it is available on the US platform (based on your feedback). Crave in Canada had it too (For all Paramount plus produced trek shows.)
Not being available would illustrate another indicator of lack of interest in international markets from Paramount.

So I have confirmed Paramount plus Canada DOES NOT have audio description. This is disappointing and illustrates how Paramount doesn't really care about the international market. P+ USA gets first class while the rest of the world gets coach.

My mom has been watching SNW and was catching up on other newer trek shows with audio description as she has vision problems. Crave had it and Paramount plus USA has it . Heck the crappy entry level ad supported CTV app even has it ( provided to them by PARAMOUNT ironically). I wrote to them (P+ Canada) and they responded with the standard ' we will pass along my suggestion to the product dept etc". But honestly. They have the asset. Is it just laziness? Less attention to detail with the app outside of USA? Not a good first impression from this Canadian.

Hopefully this feature gets added soon. Otherwise only option is the ad supported CTV app here in Canada or PVRing just the new episodes as they air and turning on audio description. .

Maybe Amazon Prime Video P+ channel has it
