Spoilers Strange New Worlds General Discussion Thread

I have empathy for Lana now as usually I can see through people who put on such a hard front that isn’t really that hard. Good job writers for giving real reasons why she puts the on a tough mask like that. I like what they have done with her character more than what they are doing with the nurse Chapel who they want to show that she is Starfleet tough. I wish they would be more subtle about that.
the creators are playing up chapel as a though girl for now as Chapel is going to become a shell of her former self by the end of SNW.
The way they have played up laan, i think she will be killed off in the end of snw and not ortega. she will be the tragic figure of snw.

That's correct, she is not.

Nothing about her sexuality has been stated one way or the other. She may yet be reveled to be LGBTQ+, and if so, fine. But as of this moment, there's no indication she is. Granted, there's no indication she isn't either, but that does not automatically mean she is.
yes, nothing about her sexuality has been disclosed, people just assume she is lgbtq because they have seen too much stereotypes in other media.

I always felt it was uhura that was meant to be the lgbtq character because streaming trek since star trek discovery has pledged in casting lgbtq actors in lgtq roles and celia gooding is an lgbtq plus actress while melisa, I think is married to a man based on her twitter feeds.

If we get him I'd be ecstatic. If he were played by Jeffrey Combs I'd be even more ecstatic.

But I'm a realist. It'll probably just be a verbal reference or even a brief cameo in a flashback.

No and No.
Chapel isn’t a “tough girl” one fight with Klingons and a little snark doesn’t make her Vasquez from Aliens. She demonstrated many facets of character in the show. TOS Chapel won’t be reappearing, And there’s no good reason for her to.
No idea if La’An will be killed off, Not something Trek does just to do Dax and Yar were killed because the actors moved on.

TOS Chapel will appear soon. she has already hinted about leaving for a research program that points to her meeting her finance.

I also think laan will die by the end of SNW. She seem to be a tougher, stronger and more serious layered character unlike Ortega and killing those kind of characterS off by many writers always carries weight.

we know by tos than laan and ortega are not on the bridge, SNW has them as main characters so that means there is going to be some serious reasons and dramatic story line of why they are not in TOS and killing of Laan is the best bet.

They could have gotten promotions and transfers to another ship. Indeed in the S1 finale we see La'an became XO of another ship by the TOS period in one timeline.

Leaving for a research program doesn’t mean a return to the one dimensional cardboard cut out of TOS,
There are two almost total restaffing of the Enterprise bridge by the time TOS starts. Only two slots were emptied through death,

You really can't conceptualize of women except in the most two-dimensional, stereotypical of terms, can you? Christine isn't a "tough girl." She did well in one fight sequence for a while and then got defeated. She's also not a "weak girl" or a "damsel in distress" -- she did well in that fight, and she held her own in hand-to-hand combat in "The Serene Squall," but she's also not a combat specialist and has her limits. She's just a reasonably competent officer who's not omnipotent.

as Chapel is going to become a shell of her former self by the end of SNW.

Or, y'know, not. The writers could in fact follow the factual outlines of Christine's TOS backstory vis-a-vis Roger Korby without changing her personality to match the TOS version's (almost total lack of a) personality.

The way they have played up laan, i think she will be killed off in the end of snw and not ortega. she will be the tragic figure of snw.

I mean, they've already had one tragic figure in Hemmer. I see no reason to have another.

It is possible; nothing about Nyota's sexuality has been established. We know that her Kelvin Timeline counterpart had a relationship with Spock (which in SNW would just feel creepy!), but that doesn't preclude her Kelvin Timeline self from being bisexual or pansexual. And the sexual orientation of her Kelvin Timeline counterpart tells us nothing about her Prime Timeline self.

plus actress while melisa, I think is married to a man based on her twitter feeds.

Her long-time partner -- he was a man, but I don't think they were married -- tragically passed way during the hiatus between filming S1 and S2, actually. I don't believe she has publicly indicated that she has entered a new relationship; last time I reviewed her tweets, she seemed to be indicating she was still grieving her partner's death.

Chapel's personality will change. this characters will become what we know in tos. ethan peck has already said in interviews that his spock is becoming who he was in TOS. This show has tried many times to bend canon but in the end the creators have said, SNW will match up with canon. this is why they can never overturn Pike's wheel chair faith either.

I am sorry to here about melisa partner's death, from her twitter feeds, it was as if they were officially married but ...be that as it may, I do think it has gotten a bit cliche people even on reddit all assume Ortega is the queer lgbtq character. Wonder why? ironic that chapel for now is the b (bisexual) in the LGBTQ meaning. so she is the lgbtq character we know offically on the show.

i do wonder if they will have chapel date girls before roger korby, this is of course atfter the spock/chapel/tpring love triangle crashes and burn out.

Chapel romantic story arc may follow many hollywood trope we see in female characters of the of the past. they go through 3 stages.

1. date a guy she really likes that does not work out (spock)
2. gets angry and hurt with men and date women due to the heart break
3. finally realises she is not a full on lesbian and gets engaged to roger korby.

I have seen this trope in many tv shows

Aiming to make SNW-Spock evolve into TOS-Spock does not mean they have an obligation to do the same for Christine.

Christine keeping her personality would not be a canon violation.

Beats me. People can be in love and absolutely committed to each other without being legally or officially married though.

... "Finally realizes she is not a full-on lesbian?" WTF?

What shows and films?
