Spoilers Strange New Worlds General Discussion Thread

Nice to see positive reviews on SNW season 2. With all the excitement about Picard, I feel like this season kinda sneaked up on us. After this season ends it's Lower Decks, so I have a few months of Trek to get excited about. I just hope they start Lower Decks after the Trek convention.
The reviews on Twitter I've seen say it's got a lot more misses than season one, and an over-emphasis on one character above the rest.

On the plus side, I tend to like lesser-liked stuff so I'll probably prefer this season:lol:

So where are all these "mixed" reviews I've heard mentioned?

The vibe I got was that mixed review was just one random YouTube thing alluding to a mixed review before the embargo was up. I am very, very happy to see the reviews that have been posted since then. I was already excited for the season and now I can't wait!

"Everything both in front of and behind the camera comes together for a bigger, better season that offers bold new adventures, grounded character work, and a true sense of wonder. Strange New Worlds Season 2 feels fresh and exciting, while also honoring every other Star Trek series that has come before it, in ways that will delight fans both new and old." (Collider)
"In the Star Trek: The Original Series episode “Return to Tomorrow,” Captain Kirk famously said, “Risk is our business.” And in Strange New Worlds Season 2, the series takes a handful of very big risks. Not just with the nature of Trek continuity, but with episodic science fiction in general. The season is gusty and feels just different enough to make you think Season 1 was holding back." (Inverse)
"While it's somewhere between a remake, prequel, and continuation (in true confusing Star Trek fashion), the most important thing is that it is irresistible television. Strange New Worlds, now in its second season, is as good as Star Trek has ever been." (TV Guide)
"Indeed, it's the breeziness of "Strange New Worlds" that might be its greatest strength. There is a featherweight, gentle sense of whimsy to the show that makes it amiable and approachable. Characters wink and sparkle and smile. They love their jobs and enjoy their lives." (/Film)

They also say one episode is a bit like Darmok, another similar to Conundrum...

Honestly this might be the best thing to see. I think this what people talk about when they want newer Trek to be a little more like older Trek. it's not clamoring for the same stories or MoRe oF thE SamE but this vibe, right here. A lot of newer Trek and newer entertainment in general for that matter is dour and self-serious. I am very happy at the prospect of characters who might be realistic and imperfect but also competent and reasonably actualized as they work together to solve problems and discover cool shit in space. Right into my veins.

I really don't follow twitter and I'm also trying to go into the season relatively spoiled free. I only glanced at the reviews posted here and they seemed positive, even if not enthusiastic. Honestly, I don't really want the hype of Picard season 3 with SNW. I almost want this season to be "average" hype with expectations at a reasonably low level, if that makes any sense. I'm not saying that to bash the series, but more I want to enjoy the episodes as they come and not look at it as this needs to be amazing. I don't really want it to be amazing.

I was around for all four seasons of ENT and how that series "destroyed" Trek continuity. We'll be just fine.

I still use Brannon Braga's "Continuity pornographer" line sometimes to this day. That phrase was one of the best things to come out of Enterprise and prefer that over "Canon"

"But the 22nd century cloaking devices the Romulans used in ENT piss all over TOS continuity! And why do they have an earlier form of photon torpedo that early even if it's called 'photonic torpedoes'? And why is T'Pol wearing Starfleet rank insignia in Season 4 if Spock was the first Vulcan in Starfleet?"

I know this is a joke but 20 years ago people were posting this kind of thing unironically.....

It’s funny, while those other complaints could be legitimate. This one isn’t. It’s an urban myth, no official production source or canon source ever said Spock was the first.(Though For some reason the official website’s databank on entry on Spock includes it)

And even if he was, T’Pol is in the earth starfleet, not the federation starfleet ;)

Yep.

Hell, the existence of the Intrepid in TOS kind of puts the lie to the theory anyways if we assume it's a Starfleet ship - and we have no onscreen reason to say it's not.
