Spoilers Strange New Worlds General Discussion Thread

Off topic, but I presume there's personal beef between Rock and the Smiths... whereas (just for instance) Ricky Gervais is laughed off for targeting individuals in an audience and taking the joke about them too far.

Oh, there is personal beef alright... it wasn't the first time he went after Jada Pinkett Smith on live television. He roasted her for boycotting the 2016 Oscars in his opening monologue by stating that as a TV actress who wasn't even invited, her boycott of the Oscars was worth exactly as much as him boycotting Rihanna's panties would be, then attacked her husband by saying that while it might be unfair that he wasn't nominated for Concussion, what's really unfair is that he managed to get paid $20 million for something as bad as Wild Wild West.

Were the stories actually different? If you have only watched the actual episodes, is there any reason to actually watch the "movies" spliced together from them?
Not really. The individual episodes were definitely better on their own, IMO.

It's been decades since I've seen any of them but, for the most part, while TOS BSG was mostly episodic in nature, there were a handful of episodes that were 2- and 3-parters that they basically put together all in one larger "movie". The "Mission Galactica: Cylon Attack" compilation was somewhat different, as it put together the excellent "Living Legend" 2-parter with the somewhat contrived "Fire in Space", two completely different stories that somehow managed to work together, albeit in a somewhat clunky manner.

One of the Galactica: 1980 telemovies was quite difficult to watch (as was most of G1980, if I'm being honest), to my recollection, as it put together elements of the 3-part pilot episodes with later episodes in the show's single and only season - causing a bit of a continuity problem with Adama's mysterious Seraphim-originating child prodigy, Dr. Zee. This character was played by two different actors (Robbie Rist for the pilot, James Patrick Stuart for the rest of the series), forcing a quick and sloppy retcon for the movie, vis-a-vis phoned-in Lorne Greene voice-overs, making them twin brothers, Dr, Zee and Dr. Zen. B+ for effort, Epic Fail for execution.

At the end of the day, the telemovies were just another money-grab opportunity to extract cash from the sponsors by Larson and Universal. They are largely ignored by the TOS fandom.

I recall Tom Hanks being on a talk show (I forget which one) a few years ago where they asked him how he felt about turning down First Contact, to which he denied ever being asked about it, and was subsequently surprised to see it pointed out on his IMDB page.
It was the Graham Norton show.

Oh. I can sure live with Mount's take on Celebrity Slapfight.

"Violence is never the answer?"

Uhhh...m'kay.

"No celebrity careers were harmed in the making of this contretemps."

We are starting to gear up for the premiere of the show itself. And that’s really exciting… There are a few things in the offing which I can’t really discuss, but I’m going to [Mission: Star Trek] in Chicago in a couple of weeks and I’m going to be seeing people there. And we’re going to be doing a lot of press. And I think we are putting together a premiere for New York, but obviously a lot of that is going to depend on how COVID rolls. That all would be happening in the week prior to launch, which is May 5th.

Making a cheap shot at a woman's medical condition is tacky as hell, and Rock deserves what he got. That said, I'm certainly not going to let the fact that some people thought he shouldn't have done it bother me. Anson Mount is as entitled to an opinion as anyone else.

It's wrong to say that people criticizing Will are ok with what Rock did. We're saying that we can fight Rock publicly, call out his actions, with nonviolence, filing a complaint, etc. Then the focus would be on Rock's actions, not Will.

Jeri Ryan gets it, and I don't believe for a second she's ok with what Rock said, as she retweeted https://twitter.com/mkguliford/status/1508416504978628610 and https://twitter.com/EverCarradine/status/1508505465843376128 . So does Anthony Rapp: https://twitter.com/albinokid/status/1508303920896094210

Oh my God, the Twitters are aflame!

Where's my fiddle?

I'm Asian and minority and got bullied severely as a kid, including physically (punched, slammed into a wall, sharp object jammed into my neck--these by various bullies in 7th grade, choked and almost killed by an African American kid in PE, for no reason other than just because they felt they could). I maintain violence is not the answer. Reporting to the teachers and principal was the answer. The last incident got the kid involved in that one put into juvenile detention. They also took action to the perpetrators with the wall slamming and jamming a nail into my neck.

In fact, said incident of almost being choked to death by a young thug makes it clearer to me in retrospect we need to emphasize nonviolence more than ever.

as a person who works in the law field..
What Will done was a crime, and should have been arrested by the cops that were on duty at the event.
Yes, Chris decided not to press charges, but Will should have had a night in jail..

Any type of violence is not good. And no matter WHAT Anybody says, up to an including N word, or any other words.. That doesn't give you permission to hit or strike anybody.

Someone asked me once, at what point if someone is yelling and screaming obscenity and every word in the dictionary at you do you have the legal right to punch them.. Answer to that.. NEVER. You touch them, YOU are going to jail.. doesn't mater what they said.

The compilation telefilmswere a way to recoup the series production costs as they didn't have enough episodes for a proper syndication rerun deal in any Market.

I'm sure the landscape has changed today but back in the sixties and seventies, most TV series didn't really make any profit whatsoever during their network runs, but made a lot of money depending on how many episodes they had and what type of syndication deal they could make in the various local TV markets across the country after a series had ended it's Network run.

It was generally considered that you had to have at least 100 episodes to be able to make a decent syndication deal.

Honestly, what Chris Rock said does not even bother me. They are all public figures in a public place. Comedians do this type of thing and push the line in the name of comedy. It was tame compared to anything at a roast. Seems to me like Will just has some anger issues due to some of the things going on in his personal life. Regardless on your opinion of how close to the line or past the line Chris Rock was, it doesn't give Will Smith the right to commit assault on stage at the Oscars.

Personally, I think all sides of this were scripted and part of a show.

^^^ A lot of people do think it was scripted. Myself included. Just another lame attempt at boosting anemic ratings.

That aside, however, apparently Jada Pinkett-Smith was diagnosed with Alopecia in 2018, leading to excessive hair loss, and it could be viewed as the joke "punching down" on someone who can't help their appearance due to some ailment. I'm all for comedians pushing boundaries (I absolutely LOVED Ricky Gervias' 2020 Golden Globes monologue, along with the blatantly uncomfortable looks it invoked from the people he was roasting), and I hate how many have been cancelled for much less but, either way, in this case, Rock probably shouldn't have gone there. Disease joking should be universally off the table, IMO. Just my 2 cubits' worth, anyways...
