Strange New Worlds disappointment

I take note that a lot of people argue the definition of gimmick versus the point that the characters feel stuck and lacking development.

:)

But yes, fair enough, poor choice of words. Still, it feels like the season has changed somehow.

Of course but i know it's gonna happen soon. At least with Sulu and Mcoy. Chekov is a wild card.. 😂

Yeah I know Mcoy isn't bridge crew but he was up there all the time...probably should have said TOS ENTPERISE crew ..
We will just have to put a pin in this and come back in 2 years to determine if indeed all of Kirk's senior staff served under Pike first or just most of them.

The episodes this season feel more like gimmicks because we're spending less time with the normal versions of these characters and putting focus on fun, high-concept altered versions. "Hegemony" is an action movie and it basically ignores the characters to focus on pure plotting. "Wedding Bell Blues," "Space Adventure Hour," and "4.5 Vulcans" are about mind controlled, imaginary holographic, and genetically reprogrammed versions of the characters respectively. "What is Starfleet?" is a great Trek story hampered by an atypical (and IMO unnecessary) format.

Five of the nine episodes released so far are not about the characters or the challenges they face as we've come to know them. Its like if, say, Bill Watterson suddenly made 60% of the Calvin and Hobbes strips about Spaceman Spiff. Yes, Spiff was always part of the strip and yes he's in Calvin's imagination but surely it's easy to understand why some people might have a problem with it?

That's not a good analogy. At least Spaceman Spiff had a consistent theme and characterization and premise, which the SNW gimmick episodes don't have across them. So SNW isn't even close to having something like Spiff to take over which might arguably have helped extend Calvin and Hobbes honestly. After all, Superman and Batman were both just one shot characters in Action Comics and Detective Comics before they took over the books entirely, and the Simpsons was just a side animation from the Tracey Ullman show once.

I guess we need a “ why are you always on the bridge” meme.

So, you're threatening me with a childhood dream come true and expect me to have a problem with it? :vulcan:

I think neither Disco or Snw are better than the sum of their parts. Still, give me a Trek show that focuses on its entire main cast instead of relegating all but one as the focal point of each season's plotlines. It's what annoyed me about Voyager after season 3: it often was the Janeway/Seven/Doctor show.
TOS will disappoint you
