News Strange New Worlds casting/new characters

I assumed the cover-up comment was meant sarcastically, because ‪‪I mean…a lot of folks clearly like the show, and we aren’t involved in any conspiracy.

But ‪‪I suppose ‪‪I should’ve known better.
That's what they want you to think man!

Serveaux is a TV writer. He wrote Tin Man and First Contact (the episode) for TNG. I disagree with many of his criticisms, but they do come from an competent, authoritative source.

And it's all opinion, too.
That was 30 years ago and he wasn't the only writer of either of those episodes. I respect that he was able to get episodes pitched, but it was with help, it was in a different era, and Michael Piller had to have polished them to some degree.

I think he could also go on Alex Kurtzman's Twitter Page and give him constructive criticism about how he's being incompetent, if he really wanted to. But it would be based on a show he's not kept up with and hasn't watched in a few years. Alex Kurtzman would disregard it, but at least the criticisms Dennis has would be seen by Mr. Kurtzman or his team.

I'm not defending the man or his views, just pointing out that he is or was a storyteller of some professional measure, and that might help frame his ability to "determine what counts as a good, competent story". Really, that's a judgment that can be made by me, Mr. Bailey, Mark Twain, or the five-year-old down the street, because we're only judging competence for own uses. The idea that we're not allowed to judge stories we watch (which is what that question boils down to) is not... something I agree with. But if there can be an objective measure of what constitutes competent stories, then certainly the one professional I'm aware of here might be the most qualified.

But Serveaux isn't innocent. He almost ironically used a strawman argument (if not for the use of the word "Some") against strawman arguments. An Inception-level attack against strawmen all the way down. Only a truly talented writer could do such a thing.

Also, you're falling into the trap that many Discovery degraders set: Alex Kurtzman has little-to-no involvement in Star Trek Discovery's creative choices anymore. That's Michelle Paradise.

Discovery = Michelle Paradise
Picard = Terry Matalas
Lower Decks = Mike McMahan
Prodigy = Hageman Brothers
Section 31 = Bo Yeon Kim & Erika Lippoldt
Academy = Stephanie Savage & Josh Schwartz

I already know all that. But Alex Kurtzman is the one still there who was in charge of what he's seen. Aaron Harberts and Gretchen Berg are gone, and so is Bryan Fuller. Unless I'm missing something, he's never seen Michelle Paradise run Discovery. Granted, I don't think that would be to his tastes either, but his opinion of the show is not based on what it currently is. And it's strange to keep commenting on a show so long after he stopped watching it and has since gone in different directions.

Either way, I've said what I wanted to say.

For what it’s worth, Bo Yeon Kim and Erika Lippoldt have left Section 31 to work on Sweet Tooth for Netflix, and Craig Sweeney took their place as S31’s showrunner/creative head.

I do.

Just so we're clear.

You got a problem with that?

Yes, I do. No need to come up with the "just my opinion" excuse, you made several claims.
The "fans" are not a unified faction, there are many different views and tastes, and many of those people actually DO primarily complain about (alleged) continuity issues, I mean just the complaints about Disco Klingons alone...

Then you said most people didn't bother with the show because of the - in your opinion - low quality of its stories as if it were an objective truth.

It doesn't matter who he is or claims to be, I can only react to his posts. It's not like professional writers are immune to making nonsensical comments.

I wish it were.

Yes, it was meant sarcastically, I should have added, "Kurtzmann got fired a couple of times and replaced by lizard men." :lol:

Anyway, this thread was about casting characters and as well as new characters. I like that we have a Singh and I'm glad that they didn't make her white. As far as the other new cast, I have no opinion about them at this point.

I'm glad we're getting to see more of Number One. I feel like she should've been in DSC Season 2 more than she was. Short Treks made up for that a little bit.
