There isn't "a point to the show" beyond the producers intent to service another portion of the fantasy.
That's like saying that it misses the point of setting STD before Kirk to have the ship catapulted into the 32nd century. SNW will make up "what the show is about" as they go along, based on audience response.
After awhile, the publicity value of adding Kirk to the show in some capacity will be irresistible, same as bringing Spock onto STD.

Yep. And Sheridan picked up most of Sinclair's original arc, including hooking up with Deleen.
Kirk will likely serve aboard Enterprise under Pike's command at some point.

Oh for sure. Kirk will be part of the show as soon as season two, I predict. If not as a guest star, as a recurring... then maybe a regular.

Fan service is what Star Trek has become, for better or worse. For me, for worse.
But then again almost all franchises have become nothing but fan service. So Trek is hardly unique in that regards.
When they remake The Menagerie they're going to have to add in a new line for Kirk where he says he met Pike once when he became a fleet captain, and also served with him for five seasons.
It is quite distasteful.

Kirk's service record just before the Enterprise Captaincy is a giant blank. But we have one data point that is always overlooked: Kirk was Pike's first officer in the Mirror Universe.
Then give him his own show.
Or, you know, we could all just be grown-ups and ignore the one line of dialog from a half-century-old episode of television that was spliced together from parts.
