News Strange New Worlds casting/new characters

You're welcome.

Anyway back on topic - so Captain Pike's hair is a slightly different colour in Strange New Worlds compared to how it was in Discovery then?

Wowza...

It’s not ‘slightly different.’ It was the most noticeable thing when the photos came out, besides having a character with the last name ‘Noonian-Singh.’

Mount isn't going to be forced out. That would be ridiculous. He's only going to go if he wants to. The whole reason this show exists in the first place is because of the obvious once-in-a-generation chemistry between him, Romijn, and Peck. However, shit happens. Bab 5 is the perfect example. The only reason there was a change in leads was because O'Hare had a personal tragedy. Had that never been an issue, Tron with a box and lighter probably would have stayed home. But tragedy or unexpected happenstance isn't the only reason for someone to change their mind about a project or want a premature exit.

But that doesn't exclude the introduction of Jimmy K. Those two things are not mutually exclusive.

A lot has happened since the end of Disco season 2 -- not the least of which being that global existential crisis thingy. Besides having a permeant effect on the general approach to production, it also greatly accelerated the growth of the streaming market, meaning CBS is facing much stiffer competition for the market share pie. Also, the last clinging hopes of there ever maybe, possibly, perhaps being more Kelvin films has all but completely fizzled out.

Also in the timeframe, Yeoh has forged a second wind to her career, which is outstanding but leaves little time for Star Trek in her schedule. Despite the pretense it's still in development, it's impossible to say whether her show happens or not. But even if it does, it most likely won't be in whatever form was initially planned. (Probably a limited run miniseries.)

Not only does this leave a gap in the production schedule, but it also leaves a gap in market draw and whatever pop culture significance there was to be had.

Enter the other half of the franchise's most famous -- and most zeitgeist-relevant -- duo.

This show will be about Pike handing over the Enterprise to Kirk in the same way that Smallville was about Clark Kent assuming his Superman identity. How many seasons did they tease that out...?

Good comparison. The actual "event" didn't occur until the series finale (after what, 10 years?). Probably what will happen with the Pike-Kirk handoff as well.

The triumvirate is the cultural touchstone, esp Kirk and Spock, and a ship called Enterprise.

I was disappointed in principle that DSC didn’t do its own thing, but became a Spock-family prequel and Pike show. Then I really liked that part the best, of all four seasons so far.

With all the fanwankery in DSC and PIC, to think that these producers can avoid the pull of getting the old, MOST well-known gang back together again is almost unthinkable. With films having to make huge profits, not just profits (which this old econ teacher doesn’t quite understand), TV is where it’s at for Trek, and where Kirk, Spock, and McCoy will eventually be again.

Though I do wish they’d make McCoy female so we don’t have three white males as the leads.

This version of Christopher Pike is awesome, but if the actor quits and they're left with a choice between recasting Anson Mount or recasting William Shatner, I think I know already which is going to have better results.

Have Una as the captain, then Pike turns up in the series finale for a joint 'promotion to fleet captain, handing the ship over to Kirk' ceremony.

Of course that was what Smallville was about. If you tell a story about Clark Kent growing up, it's going to end with him becoming Superman one day. I mean, pretty much every Superman movie has done this too.

Sometimes there is no deeper meaning in things.
No. The main point of Smallville was the old adage "the suit doesn't make the man". That is Clark putting an S on his chest isn't the thing that makes him Superman. He was that all along, not because of what he wears but because of what he does. This was at the root of all the "no flights, no tights" pre-launch press. It's all but out-right stated in the pilot. And is the core theme of every season finale. The first season finale sees him doing Superman things in an actual suit suit. There is no deeper meaning here. This is grade school level stuff.

Now, you can argue that it was the wrong direction to go, but it's not the writers' fault people took the show literally and couldn't be bothered with even the most rudimentary amount of subtext.

But certainly people did and began whining about not seeing the suit and dropped the show, which I suppose IS apropos here.

Because if they wait too long, people are going to start whining about not seeing Kirk and will inevitably drop the show.

Which is the whole fucking point of the exercise.
