Strange New Worlds Alternate timelines

201

I like Ketwolski just fine. Posts here from time to time.

I still not a fan of Trek YT. Nor the alternate timeline nonsense.

My general point is, it doesn’t really matter; it’s officially not in an alternative timeline, so it’s just not something to debate. Individual head canon, however… do what you want. It doesn’t impact me and it doesn’t change the facts.

I feel compelled to emphasize what others have said: Ketwolski is a thoughtful video maker who has spoken out against the toxic fringe of fandom, and it sure isn't fair to lump him in with them. He hasn't posted in a long time, and I hope things are OK with him!

That said, it's an old video and I don't see the point of posting it now with no commentary or explanation, since it originates before we had, you know, a series to discuss?

it is not an alternate timeline, although they will play fast and loose with some continuity as with the star wars prequel movies.

spock story is already done. we know this spock's played by ethan peck as already met his alternate self and is deceased by star trek beyond. Additionally Michael in season 3 of Discovery is also aware of spock's fate when she travelled to the future.

It's not really applicable though as the prequel trilogy proper didn't cover the same timeframe and locations the way SNW makes the Enterprise look very different from Cage and WNMHGB (Q&A directly precedes Cage for example but has the new sets and uniforms).

The closest we got was Rogue One, and there the Death Star and Yavin sets were recreated almost exactly. In Revenge of the Sith, we got a ship that looked like the original film's Tantive IV, but fan outcry was so great over minor cosmetic differences (far, far, far more minor than the differences between TOS and SNW Enterprises to the point casual fans don't know the difference) that Lucasfilm later declared the ships in ROTS and the 1977 film to be different ones, something that still holds in the Disney reboot.

SNW is the Primest Timeline. TOS is an alternate, and needs some kind of name.
I have taken to calling TOS the Proto-Timeline. I used to call it the ur-Timeline, the timeline from which all subsequent interpretations of Star Trek ultimately derive, but Proto goes better with Prime.

Assuming you're not being sarcastic, of course.

I skimmed the video; it’s fine.

Each series draws from the previous ones but it never matches the logic or vibes of their universes. To me each series is distinct and its own universe. Heck seasons within series are their own universes. TNG Seasons 1&2 are distinct from 3-7 and their own universe. I’d love to have another 5 seasons of that and seeing what it evolved into.

Or see (out of morbid curiosity?) what those writers/producers might have done with DS9 after that.

Even individual episodes within series could be glimpses into different universes. “Where No Man Has Gone Before” for example is distinct from TOS proper.

But, no, yeah, they’re all magically part of the same one and everything makes sense.

…it’s both and neither. Just fun to think about when you’re not taking it all too seriously.

I wonder what TOS 2.0 would be like @Ryan Thomas Riddle. Lord knows we don’t need another prequel or remake, but…thought experiment…imagine a shot-by-shot remake of TOS but with contemporary budget and production techniques. Or simply a faithful reinterpretation of it, again with contemporary sets, special effects, editing, more naturalistic acting, etc. Not to replace TOS — and hopefully not in place of newer stories — just because they’ve got money to burn and schedules to fill. Might be fun to visit that universe too. To have it in the video library. To hop from it to 1.0 and compare and contrast.
