Was it a deliberate casting choice to have the actress Samantha Smith play the leader of one side of the Kiley race? In a story featuring potential mutually assured destruction between two conflicting nations?

I'm recalling Maine's Samantha Smith, the ten year old girl who wrote to the Soviet President and pleaded with him not to start a nuclear war.

This is just too bizarre.
