So I saw it fully now and so far, it was average, nothing really big or special, I am not too keen on some of the acting though, I feel the actors who play Laan and Spock (Ethan Peck) are the weak link in acting.

the episode was sort of saved at the end with Pike's speech but why does earth have to go into darkness in the past timeline. I guess this is just Kurtzman been Kurtzman.

I will keep watching but I will have to say that a lot of what has been said seems overhyped with the reviews. I will give it a 6.5/10.

Here's one - why are the landing party in uniform when they beam down but materialize in civilian clothes in an alley? A few tweaks to the transporter's transmutation circuits?

yes, they explicitly talk about it.

Just a random question I have is whether this episode is set after the finale of Discovery S2, since it's not clear how Pike went from being happy captaining the Enterprise to hating it and becoming a morose beard guy.

no time to think about it during the mission, but during downtime? Ton of Bricks.

How was that possible if Pike and Co. literally just decided they'd need to go down in disguise? I'll likely watch again tonight and maybe I missed something, or a passage of time at some point and this wasn't what really happened.

Apparently some sneaky editing where we skip the meeting with the Doctor to tell him what they need, and go right to the meeting M'Benga calls to tell them it's ready.

Really? Her name is Patel? Captain Patel? So they couldn't find an Indian actress to play that character but they found one to play the Vulcan one, huh?

Logically, these sorts of name mismatches should be way more common in Trek, given all the ways a last name can crossover cultures.

To be fair unless I'm misremembering the one time they do is the time they establish how dangerous and risky it is. But given that the transporter has sensors with enough resolution to pick out and snag each individual molecule in someone's body at a distance of hundreds of thousands of kilometers I have a very hard time buying that "transporting within the ship" is beyond their capabilities.

Transporters are farsighted. To optimize range things within walking distance can get a little...blurry. At least that's how I look at it. Starfleet just needs to implement a "reading glasses" setting.

but why does earth have to go into darkness in the past timeline. I guess this is just Kurtzman been Kurtzman.

huh? it's been a thing since TOS, and was made explicit in Encounter at Farpoint.

At least now we know that 1.) Paris DID get hit by a nuclear weapon but 2.) it must have been a glancing blow or not a very high yield since the base of the Eiffel Tower remains and it can be rebuilt from that level up. It was always weird that Riker said most major cities were destroyed in World War III yet Paris in the 23rd and 24th centuries looked untouched.

So...I love the look of the show and it's wonderful having Pike, Spock and Una back and I loved the references to Discovery (this felt like a natural continuation of where things were left in season 2) but if I'm being honest, the episode overall was kind of "meh" for me. But it's the first episode and unlike the other shows because of the episodic nature I think there will be a lot more room to impress me.

Something else I noticed when watching this versus when I'd watch Discovery or most episodes of Picard...I wanted more and was surprised and disappointed the episode was over. With the other shows I found myself just wanting to get through it to find out what happens. Even in the case of Picard where some episodes were really short, I never had that "Aww, over already?" feeling that I got with SNW. For the first time since Lower Decks I find myself genuinely looking forward to the next installment.

Rewatching the scenes between Spock & T'Pring one gets the distinct impression that he actually does love and care for her and it isn't just because of the 'arranged marriage'.

Years later, when he gets over the fact that Jim isn't dead, he must have really been broken hearted that she turned on him.
(though his logical mind would understand why)

The aliens were forgettable and really just glorified set-dressing. The fairy tale ending was okay, but would have liked to have seen more nuance. A lot of the dialog was clunky. But the characters all showed potential, which did a lot to hold my attention.

I'd say a soft "B", whatever number that is.

How would you know that?

Yes it was. It was done once in TOS.
How would I know, I watched TOS! And yes, I know it was done ONCE in TOS. It was a tricky thing. Not the norm.

Yeah, it's a minor quibble but there's just no point for it. Shoot, as I said, use the impracticality of intra-ship beaming to help the drama.

I do think the Samuel Kirk thing is a bit much. Obviously he’s just there for name recognition. No need to shrink the universe that much.
Agreed. I guess ultimately, I don't have a strong issue with it. But it does seem like an excessively small universe.

And you'd think Spock, Uhura, and Chapel would've commented serving with JT Kirk's brother. Well, I suppose they did but off camera!

Makes sense, most nukes are pretty small these days, relying on a bunch of them being released from one rocket in the hopes that some won't be destroyed before detonation.

The fairy tale ending was okay, but would have liked to have seen more nuance.

Watch it again, that montage could go bad many ways, including the aliens reverse engineering a starship and going on the offensive, and another group starting a new religion.

The nuke that hit Washington, D.C. was definitely low yield. Most of the Capitol dome was still intact.
