I will also note that this episode ties in reasonably well with Chapel being (in "What Are Little Girls Made Of") a researcher who fell back on nursing training to get into Starfleet, but on the other hand, genetic temporary "plastic-surgery-in-a-shot" to blend in with the natives?!? They didn't have that in TNG, much less TOS!

And who's the Andorian? And the rather attractive young captain with whom Pike had breakfast (and apparently other things) at the beginning of the episode? Not that I object to another piece of canonical evidence that Janice Lester was a total nutjob.

You forgot the spoiler tags. :)
That’s a Aenar, not a Andorian.

And I'm probably not the only one here who doesn't do pay-to-stream.

Uh, the last time I checked, Aenar were Andorians (Although to be fair, I didn't even notice his complexion, he came and went so fast). As I recall, there's even a non-canon source in which we see Thelin (from TAS "Yesteryear"), and learn that he's part Aenar.

This is a spoiler-tagged topic. It's reasonable to assume that spoiler information for the series will appear in the context of discussion whether the information is from this episode or someone simply considers it pertinent to discussing this episode.

Of course, it would be impossible to look up Batel and not know what she does (under protest, as I understand it) in "A Quality of Mercy."

I'm guessing that the plot of that episode has nothing to do with an alien healing machine, nor with an Australian tea brewed from koala fur.
. . .You look like the sort of man who'd be up on his Shakespeare, mate.
What does Shakespeare have to do with choking on a mouthful of hair?
Portia's line, from The Merchant of Venice, mate: "The koala tea of Mercy is not strained."

I’m listening to the Audio commentary, and Anson did his research on Pike.

He was confused why the opening scene was in Montana and not Mojave, According to Akiva they wanted it to be Mojave and they were going to film in Mexico, but Covid bit that in the butt, so they just filmed in Canada and called it Montana

Mount wanted Pike’s horse to be the same breed as the one seen in The Cage, but they couldn’t find one.

Also apparently the corridor sets on Discovery were loud and they needed to ADR a lot, but the SNW sets are insulated more and don’t require it.

Akiva clearly knows TOS, you can tell by the way he talks about it. He even admits bringing in the Gorn may have been ill advised.

Arena is one of Anson’s favourite TOS episodes

I think this was mentioned in an interview, but it was Akiva who named Erica Ortegas after Eric Ortega from Gene’s original pitch

Akiva had some frames removed during the beam out scene in the elevator as an homage to TOS Season 3 doing something similar? I’m not sure what he’s referring to

I guess they figured they needed to have those scenes set in Montana because they needed to film in snow, but people don’t realize it can snow a fair amount in Mojave, particularly up in the surrounding mountains, but desert equals sand and cactus for most.

And the trees too.
