Also, the captain's log would be the best example of "dumbing down."
more used for "setup", or in some cases it was past tense, but it was never really used to explain plot points, actions, character exposition etc...more like a brief recap or a plan of action, nothing wrong with that.
To Be fair, I should qualify this though, there has seemed to be a paradigm shift where writing has improved lately, from 2015 to about 2023 (if I had to guess) was the pinnacle of what I noticed being dumbed down...excessive exposition, "info dumps", things happening "because the plot needs it to happen" and so on...it still happens to a degree, of course
